The Street - by Tim Mullaney 7/30/14
CUNA's chief economist Mike Schenk says the economy will grow at a 3% clip in the second half and 3.75% next year. Consumer confidence has picked up notably in recent reports, and Schenk points out that the country has its oldest stock of durable goods like furniture and appliances since World War II. Like housing, the durable goods cycle gives the recovery an obvious place to find its next stage of growth.
The Street - by Tim Mullaney 7/30/14
"We've seen a lot of good news, but you can't discount what people have been through," said Mike Schenk, CUNA's chief economist. Workers and companies alike need more time with easy financial conditions to recover from all the damage done to asset values, business confidence and, most of all, ordinary people's incomes.
The Street - by Joe Deaux 7/29/14
CUNA's chief economist Mike Schenk says that consumer confidence looks solid, but that in other recoveries the number should be above 100. Schenk says what gives him optimism is that consumers aren't just saying they're more confident, but they're also taking out more loans and acting more upbeat than they have since the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis.
Marketwatch - by Sital S. Patel 7/29/14

CUNA Chief Economist Mike Schenk comments in the timeline at 12:45 p.m. in the Economy & Consumer Section: "Wage growth has been basically flat for the last seven years. Consumers are probably feeling good about the improvement in the employment picture, but it's not all rosy for American households. In a recent survey, less than half of households say they are better off now than they were a year ago."The economy is still down 3 million jobs in manufacturing and construction.
