The Credit Union National Association supports the measure because it would put the country's privately insured credit unions on the same footing as their federally insured counterparts where it come to membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank system.
Credit unions have been leading the charge in both issuing and refinancing college loans since 2008, according to Vincent Passione, CEO of LendKey, a private student-loan program that helps credit unions underwrite and price student loans. "If you underwrite these loans correctly, there is an attractive return," he says.
"Putting a little aside for any kind of big expense makes a lot of sense," says Mike Schenk, vice president of economics and statistics with the Credit Union National Association.
