Though they're often known for their free checking, credit unions also offer wide-ranging savings accounts.

I know firsthand that credit unions are working with their members affected by this breach, and reissuing cards to them at no cost. Again, that's the right way to do business. But, contrary to what some might think, the expense for taking this action is not and will not be reimbursed by Target. Rather, credit unions and banks rely on interchange revenue to cover the cost of card program administration, including in these circumstances, reacting to a merchant data breach.

I'm not the only person who no longer trusts banks enough to do business with them. Back in 2011, people came out in the streets during the Occupy Wall Street movement and demanded change from government and banks. They wasted little time waiting for the banks to react and put matters into their own hands by holding "Bank Transfer Day." An estimated 214,000 moved their money from banks to credit unions around that time.

According to the Credit Union National Association, more than 96 million Americans use credit unions, which generally offer higher savings rates and lower fees than traditional banks.
