The US 36 Express Lanes were open for testing free of charge until tolling commencement on July 22, 2015. Remember, there are still two free general purpose lanes in each direction on US 36, so you will always have a choice.
If you want to use the US 36 Express Lanes as a driver (not bus transit), you should get an ExpressToll account. Otherwise, you will receive a License Plate Toll bill and pay the higher toll rate. ExpressToll customers always receive the lowest toll rate on all Colorado tolling facilities. ExpressToll works on the following roads: US 36, I-25, E-470 and Northwest Parkway. Which transponder do I need?
If you will be using the Express Lanes in HOV/Carpool mode, then you will need an ExpressToll account with the Switchable HOV Transponder to drive for free. This switchable transponder costs $15. If you do not intend to use the Express Lanes in HOV/Carpool mode, then a regular ExpressToll sticker tag works just fine. This sticker tag is free.
Motorcycles will now need an ExpressToll account and a motorcycle tag to drive for free on the Express Lanes. If the motorcyclist already has an ExpressToll account, they simply need to add their motorcycle to that account at no additional charge. If a motorcyclist does not have an ExpressToll account, they will need to create one with the $35 balance of pre-paid tolls.
