Holiday Blessings to You and Yours
As we rush to close out this hectic year and prepare for the holiday season, I trust each of us will take time to reflect on those parts of our lives for which we are grateful.
Allow me to say that I am profoundly grateful that you have given me the privilege of serving as your Council Member these past four years. Every day I am reminded of the joys and challenges of the job. Being able to join with our friends and neighbors in working to make our part of Houston a better home for our families is a remarkable honor. So too am I thankful for being given the opportunity to serve you again for the next term.
Lastly, I am blessed to be able to serve alongside the dedicated staff of your District J Office: Dave Bonem, Sharon Shanahan, Jonny Flores and Eric Widaski. Each day they work hard to directly respond to the needs of our residents. I thank them for their deep sense of public service, their strong work ethic and their infectious good will and cheer.
May each of you find and count the true blessings in your life during this sacred season.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year!
Blessings,
-Council Member Mike Laster, District J

Ground Broken for SER-Ninos Library
The Gulfton community will soon benefit from the addition of a public children's library on the SER-Ninos Charter School campus! In addition to funds being available through private donations, the District J Office was able to secure federal Community Development Block Grant monies for this project. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday, December 11th commemorating the beginning of construction.
The library is a part of a unique joint project between the school and the Houston Public Library. While it will be on the school campus, the library will be open to the public after school hours and on weekends. The library is currently scheduled to be completed Fall 2016.
Students handed out letters at the ceremony, describing their positive experiences at SER-Ninos. They also thanked supporters for attending the Groundbreaking Ceremony. Below you will find the letters of Gustavo Dolores and Erika Avendano, who are shown in the picture above.
