HBU Belin Tower Dedication
I was pleased to celebrate the dedication of Belin Tower at Houston Baptist University on August 25th. This marks one of the first stages in HBU's Master Plan for expanding and upgrading academic, athletic, administrative and recreational facilities at the southern corner of Fondren and US 59.
Belin Tower is a red brick, 87-foot-tall, Georgian-style memorial, inspired by Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The new Belin Drive extends a short street, often referred to as "the road to nowhere," into a roundabout and road that leads to the center of campus. The entrance will provide direct access to campus from the US 59 entrance. The $160 Million redevelopment of HBU's campus is part of a 380 Development Agreement passed by City Council in 2013. The agreement provides a framework for HBU to develop public infrastructure improvements such as: drainage, a detention pond, public tennis courts, parking, and landscaping along US59 and the Fondren esplanade.
These new developments represent a major milestone for southwest Houston. I am proud of the progress HBU is making and look forward to more exciting changes still to come!
Go Huskies!
