We LOVE our Parks!

Those of us who live in Southwest Houston understand the importance of our neighborhood parks. They increase the desirability, property values, and quality of life of our communities. Many of you know of the new and upcoming walking trail at Crain Park and spray ground at Lansdale Park. Both projects are starting construction this summer. In addition to these improvements, I am pleased to announce the pavilion at Lansdale Park will be replaced!

Previous plans called to repair and paint the existing rust-covered structure. However the Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) has determined that ongoing maintenance and repairs of the existing structure justify the lower cost of a newly constructed pavilion. Passage of the FY16-20 Capital Improvement Plan on July 8th ensured a full replacement of the current structure and construction of a new family picnic pavilion, very similar to the one pictured above.

While project specifications for the pavilion are still in the works, HPARD reports that design of the facility will begin this year. A construction start date is currently scheduled for next summer. After months of meetings and negotiations with HPARD and the Mayor's Office, I am pleased that this new facility will soon take the place of the old pavilion that has become a neighborhood eyesore.

With all of these exciting projects forthcoming, I have asked HPARD to host a meeting on August 6th at 6:30pm at the Sharpstown Community Center (6600 Harbor Town Dr.) to give updates on all upcoming and ongoing parks projects in the district. Representatives from HPARD will be on hand to speak and answer questions. Please make plans to attend!

Thank You,

City Council Passes CIP
After a lengthy Council Agenda session on Wednesday, July 8th, City Council passed the FY16-20 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The CIP is a five-year plan for infrastructure projects in the city.

Included in the plan was an amendment that preserved $9.2 Million in ReBuild Houston funds for badly-needed street and drainage projects. The passage of this amendment, supported by Council Member Laster, protected these funds for use within the CIP, allowing for additional and expedited street and drainage projects.

Council Member Laster also put forth an amendment that was passed by Council, which re-established funding for the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program from $0 to $250,000. This program provides funding for projects that address cut-thru traffic, speeding, and public safety concerns in our neighborhoods.

Some upcoming CIP projects in District J include:

- Reconstruction of Fondren Road (Westpark to 59)

- Water line replacement projects in Sharpstown

- Gulfton & Shenandoah major storm drainage projects

- Lansdale Park, Crain Park, Burnett Bayland Park,  Sharpstown Park, & Braeburn Glen Park and Lee LeClear Tennis Center improvements

- Renovation of Fire Station #68

- Various sidewalk rehabilitation projects and traffic signal upgrades

Final Storm Debris Pick-Up

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department will be undergoing a final collection of storm debris on July 27th for Southwest Houston (south of I-10 and west of SH 288).

Residents will need to have debris curbside by 7am on that day.  Trash should be separated to the best of residents' abilities, into five piles away from fire hydrants, mailboxes, power lines and other objects that will hamper safe pickup.

The following should be separated into individual piles:

- Vegetative Debris - leaves (do not put in bags), logs, plants, tree branches.

- Construction & Demolition Debris - building materials, carpet, drywall, furniture, lumber, mattresses and plumbing.

- Appliances - air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters.

- Electronics - computers, radios, stereos, televisions, other devices with a cord.

- Household Hazardous Waste - cleaning supplies, batteries, lawn chemical, oils, oil-based paints, stains and pesticides.

Normal household trash and bagged debris of any kind will not be picked up as part of this program. You should continue to follow your normal garbage schedule.
