A Path Forward for Sharpstown's Ditches

The state of the storm ditches throughout Sharpstown have been an ongoing challenge for many years. Their unique nature - and frankly poor engineering - have led to years of neglect and maintenance efforts that produced inadequate results. District J deserves better.

After months of discussions with the Public Works & Engineering Dept. (PWE), I am pleased to announce both long-term and short-term solutions for these ditches. A Local Drainage Project that would build permanent ramps to ensure safe access is in the queue as a long-term project. In the short-term, PWE will be acquiring a mobile ramp unit that will allow crews to access the channel to clean the ditch. This new equipment is currently estimated to be available within the next 3 months.

Please join me in thanking PWE for working so hard for these many months to find this creative solution to a difficult, but significant problem.

Thank You,

FY16 Budget Includes CDSF & Senior Tax Relief

On Wednesday, June 17th, City Council adopted the Fiscal Year 2016 Operating Budget. As part of the budget, City Council unanimously approved a property tax exemption for seniors and disabled residents, doubling the exemption from $80,000 to $160,000. The average senior household should save an additional $252 each year.

Council Member Laster and Vice Mayor Pro-Tem Davis also sponsored a joint budget amendment to restore the Council District Service Fund (CDSF) to its full $1 million for each Council District. The fund has been used to implement important neighborhood projects and community initiatives.

Special Thanks to Gary Readore in Solid Waste
Gary Readore, a long time Sharpstown resident, is retiring as Chief of Staff for the Solid Waste Department on June 30th, 2015. He will be moving to Huntsville, Texas "to enjoy the scenery, peace & quiet and virtually no traffic, lol!"

The District J office would like to acknowledge and thank Gary (pictured above right) for his 30 years of service to the City of Houston, especially the District J residents.

Gary played a vital role in delivering the big green single-stream recycling bins to District J. He recently helped coordinate the supplemental storm debris pickups across Houston after the Memorial Day floods. Please join us in wishing Gary continued blessings and happy trails on his much deserved retirement!
