Houston Recovers

As we all know, Houston underwent some major weather events this past week. Some of the worst affected areas were in Southwest Houston.  As a result, the District J office has been working to connect residents with much-needed resources.

Before the flooding on Memorial Day, residents of District J suffered damage from an EF-1 tornado on Sunday, May 24th. The Rockport Apartment Complex at 8500 Nairn sustained heavy damage.  Fortunately there were only two minor injuries.

I am thankful that the Mayor and first-responder personnel from the Houston Fire DepartmentHouston Police Department, and multiple other departments, visited the property, surveyed the damage, and assisted residents as needed. If you would like to donate to help residents, visit the Red Cross site, call 1-866-526-8300, or text "redcross" to 90999 to automatically donate $10 from your phone bill.

Last Friday, the District J office with the Housing and Community Development Department coordinated the work of nearly 100 volunteers. Those volunteers visited some of our worst-hit neighborhoods and communities providing much needed help, many in District J. If you know of anyone who needs assistance, whether they are elderly, disabled, or just need help, please let the District J office know so that we can coordinate resources.

In case you missed the Friday e-mail, here is some important information regarding Solid Waste pickup schedules and storm debris.

Thank You,

City Files Lawsuit Against Houston Westlake Village

Earlier in May, the City of Houston's Legal Department filed a petition against the Houston Westlake Village Apartments, formerly known as Kings Gate. The petition is based on Chapter 54 (structural) and Chapter 125 (criminal) violations.

This apartment complex has been the subject of many complaints, ranging from never-ending construction, weeds and broken windows, crime, and major sewage and infrastructure problems. Since 2012, the District J office has worked with the Public Works Multi-Family Habitability Division, HPD's Differential Response Team, the Health and Human Services Department, and the Legal Department to ensure that the property is brought into compliance with health, safety, and building codes.

It was a pleasure to invite the Reverend Christine Faulstich to offer the opening prayer of City Council on Wednesday, May 27th. Reverend Faulstich is the current Rector of Epiphany Episcopal Church located at the intersection of Gessner and Bissonnet.
