 Dear District J Residents,
I want to thank everyone for coming out to our Annual CIP town hall meeting this past Wednesday! We had more than 100 people in attendance. Your insight and questions were essential to making the evening a success. As always, I encourage you to attend this annual meeting to voice your opinion about the Capital Improvement Plan. If you missed it this year, please plan to come next year! CIPs are never finished - they are a continuing work in progress.
Some of the highlights for the evening included updates on our District J Parks, as this year will herald construction of improvements for Crain & Lansdale Parks in Sharpstown. The design process for renovations to Sharpstown Park and the Gulfton Skatepark will begin this year as well. Additionally, there are five water-line replacement projects that are ongoing, or that will be starting, across Sharpstown this year. A major storm drainage project will be commencing in the Shenandoah and Gulfton communities as well.
Information was provided about ongoing and upcoming TIRZ projects in the District. The estimated $26 million Bellaire Reconstruction Project is almost finished, with landscaping and lighting elements remaining to be completed. I am also very pleased to announce the start of construction this year on the estimated $12 million Fondren Road Reconstruction Project. This project will provide for the complete reconstruction of this major thoroughfare from US59 northward to Westpark. Additionally the roadway's accompanying storm drainage system will be overhauled, in order to reduce flooding in the area.
We were also able to present information about the Council District Service Fund (CDSF), which will provide up to $1 million for projects in District J. More than 40 proposals have been submitted to our office by community leaders. Many of the proposals have received Mayoral approval and cost-estimates. Nearly half of those requests can be achieved with existing resources. Many have already been resolved, while others are still in progress.
I hope that you are as excited as I am to move forward with all these projects. If you would like to get a more detailed look as to what all the City is doing in District J, I encourage you to check out the extensive City-wide information database GIMS. Please do not hesitate to contact your District J office for more information or if we can be of service to you.
Thank You,

- Council Member Mike Laster, District J
