Be on the Watch to Help Prevent Crime...

Over the past few weeks, the District J Office has been made aware of a series of crimes taking place in the part of Sharpstown located south of Bellaire, between Fondren and Gessner. Ranging from house break-ins to vehicle burglary, these crimes have left the neighborhood on edge. As a four time victim of house break-ins, I can attest to the sickeningly vulnerable feeling experienced after such an episode. If there is a bright spot to these incidents, the neighborhood is becoming more vigilant in taking steps to prevent crime in the first place.

I want to thank the Houston Police Department, the Sharpstown Civic Association (SCA) and SEAL Security, the security firm that serves both the SCA and the Greater Sharpstown Management District, for working so closely together to respond, prevent, and combat this series of crimes. Captain Dale of HPD's Midwest Command Station has informed me that HPD is actively monitoring the area and pursuing leads on these crimes. Extra patrols by both HPD and SEAL are underway, and undercover surveillance is in progress.

All District J residents and communities can take pro-active steps to help prevent crimes in our neighborhoods.

First and foremost keep your eyes open and use common sense. Meet your neighbors if you don't already know them. Watch out for each other's property. If you see strange vehicles or pedestrians loitering in the area - take note of their description or write down the license number to provide that information to police and security as needed. Contact 911 first, then any local security provider your neighborhood may provide, if you see suspicious activity. Take simple steps such as locking your house doors and windows and car doors - all the time - even when you are home. Install deadbolt locks. If you have a back yard fence - lock it. Leave lights on at night. Park your cars in your garage if you have one (that could be a good excuse to clean the garage!). Don't leave valuables in plain view. Additionally, consider investing in a security system. In my humble opinion, it is worth it.

Those are just a few suggestions. The Houston Police Department has a whole list of crime prevention steps we can take. You can find those suggestions here.

Finally, I encourage all of our District J civic and home owner association leadership to take part in the local PIP Meetings hosted by Houston Police Department. At those meetings you can meet and develop a direct relationship with the police officers who patrol our streets as well as meet other local leaders. HPD values those types of neighborhood relationships as much as we do.

Living in the nation's fourth largest city - we can't expect to stop all crime. But, working together we can send a strong message that District J is taking all appropriate steps to prevent crime in the first place.

Be safe,

Hurricane Readiness - Pet Preparation

Pets also need preparation for hurricanes, severe weather, and emergencies. Their needs are pretty similar to your needs, but with a few extra considerations.
  • Identification: Your pets should have an ID tag with your current contact information on it. Also make sure your veterinarian has your current contact information on file. Consider microchiping your pet to help you reunite with your pet in case his collar gets lost if you are separated.
  • Equipment: Leashes, harnesses, and muzzles for larger dogs. Crates, cages or carriers for smaller dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small pets. Make sure all equipment is in good condition and that your emergency phone number is written on them in permanent ink. *
  • Supplies: Be sure to keep enough food and water (and bowls) for your pets to last at least three days. If you have a cat, also keep a supply of litter and litter box that can fit into your cat's carrier or enclosure. Other useful items include towels, blankets, newspapers, trash bags, hand sanitizer, and a few toys.
  • Information: Keep your pet's medical records and vet's contact information in a waterproof document bag or gallon freezer bag. Include phone numbers for an emergency contact outside of your area in case you need to temporarily evacuate or relocate after the storm.
  • Animal First Aid: Familiarize yourself with the signs of heatstroke and prepare a first aid kit, including any medications, suitable to your animals needs. Your veterinarian can provide you with resources specific to your pet.

If you choose to evacuate, take all your pets and make sure they are safely contained and secured in your vehicle with your supplies and equipment.

If you choose to shelter in place, bring your pets indoors and confine them in a small, comfortable area away from windows where you can easily reach them. Keep them leashed or in carriers if possible.

After the storm, keep your pets confined while you check your home and property for damage and hazards. Broken glass, roofing nails, and other debris are dangers to paws, and damaged fences or windows could allow escape, or stray animals in. If your area has experienced flooding, sewage may also be a danger.

Disruption of regular routines is stressful on people and pets alike. If you notice behavior changes, loss of appetite, or other signs of stress that persist or become worrisome, contact your vet.

*Consider training your dog to walk quietly on a leash. Cats and other small animals should be familiarized with carriers.

Sales Tax Holiday Weekend - August 9-11

The Texas legislature approved Senate Bill 485 to move the sales tax holiday weekend up 1 week to August 9 through 11 (originally set for August 16-18).

This law exempts most adult and children's clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks under $100 from sales tax. This should save shoppers roughly $8 for every $100 spent.

For more information on the Sales Tax Holiday and complete lists of tax exempt items and guidelines on layaways and rain checks, please visit the Texas Comptroller's webpage

5th Annual Back to School Drive - August 17

On August 17, 2013, Houston Credit Unions Association and PlazAmericas Mall in partnership with TELEMUNDO and KTJM La Raza 98.5 & 103.3 FM will be hosting the "5th Annual Back to School Drive, Health Fair and Business Expo" for 2013, the largest community service event of the year. The event will distribute backpacks full of school supplies, uniforms and other items. This is a big undertaking that requires a collaboration of several organizations whose mission and vision are to help the community regardless of race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or ethnicity. This is in response to the "No child left behind" initiative. Several individuals and companies heard the plea and with the combined effort this project became a reality. With the help of Houston Independent School District (HISD) more than 20 schools were chosen with approximately 7,000 students and approximately 4,000 families will benefit from this event.

Adjoining the event is a Health Fair that will distribute preventative information and free medical check-up that will give families an opportunity to speak with several healthcare providers and a Business Expo that will allow business owners to promote their products and services.  To complete the package, a fun fair will be provided for children that will include face painting, snow cones, popcorn, dancing, moon walks, entertainments and more.

HPD is Looking for a Few Good Ambassadors

VIPHave you ever wondered what kind of training a police officer must undergo to do his or her job? Do you think you could do it just as well, or better? Now is your chance to find out. The Houston Citizens' Police Academy, HCPA, is currently accepting applications for the fall class beginning September 12 through November 14.

The closing date for the fall class is August 22nd. In the event an application is received after the closing date, the application will be considered for the next class. The HCPA classes are held twice a year; spring and fall.

The Houston Citizens' Police Academy graduated its first class on August 3, 1989 under Chief Lee P. Brown. The overall objective of the Houston Citizens' Police Academy was to provide citizens with sound and accurate information about the Houston Police Department and the criminal justice process. This affords participants the able to make informed decisions when issues or matters involve the police department or police activity. It is the department's hope that participants in the Citizens Police Academy will share their experiences and learned information with family, friends, co-workers, and their communities to further improve and strengthen community-police relations in Houston and become ambassadors for the department.

  • Cost: ALL CLASSES ARE FREE!
  • Date: September 12 through November 14 every Thursday for 10 weeks, from 6 pm to 9 pm. The Citizens Police Academy is a 33-hour block of instructions. The first day of class is Orientation, and the last day is Graduation.
  • Location: Houston Police Department Academy, 17000 Aldine Westfield Road 77070 (some sessions are held at various HPD locations such as Hobby Airport and Mounted Patrol).

District J Spotlight - Houston Fire Department Station 73

The next station in District J's Houston Fire Department series is Station 73 in HFD District 68. The original location for the station was on Boone Road in the Alief Volunteer Fire Department Station. It relocated to its permanent home at 9640 Wilcrest at Bissonnet in 1985. In its earlier days, the station had an engine and a medic unit with one paramedic. It has since grown to include an engine, ambulance, and squad.

Approximately 10 years ago, the station upgraded the medic unit to a basic life support ambulance with 2 paramedics, creating Squad 73 in response to the increased calls for trauma due to its proximity to the intersection of Beltway 8 and Highway 59. While the majority of calls are medical in nature, it also responds to many residential fire calls to apartments and single family homes in the area. Captain James Graves of Station 73 also reported that they have responded to two helicopter crashes and one airplane crash since he joined the station in 2001.

Captain Graves described Station 73 as "a good house." "We started small and have grown to be a major player in District 68." He also reported that in its earlier days, 73 responded to 2 runs a day but that they now average 12 to 15 runs daily and have made as many as 20 in one day. "Busy stations are always filled by people who want to be there," said Graves, and Station 73 is no exception.

The Station 73 logo and motto, shown above, reflect Captain Graves' remarks. "Born brave, sworn to save" is their motto. The logo was designed by former Station 73 driver Doug Darber, now a member of Station 86.

If you are interested in adopting a District J fire station or any HFD station, you can learn more about the HFD Adopt A Fire Station here. The program gives citizens and organizations a formal vehicle by which they may make tangible donations to the fire stations of their choice. Its purpose is similar to other city programs whereby such groups are permitted to adopt parks and esplanades.

The District J office is immensely proud of Station 73. We hope you will join us in recognizing their service and contribution to keeping our community safe.
