Hola de Argentina!
Either by luck, serendipity or just odd planning, most of my vacation trips have involved traveling during the winter or to winter weather destinations. That can be a nice diversion from Houston's summer heat. Such is the case again. I am enjoying the brisk weather as I take a few days to "recharge the batteries". I hope you and your loved ones have planned some time for relaxation this summer.
One of the challenges of taking some time off is making sure our businesses, jobs and work lives are attended to. Your District J office is up and running. Sharon, Leah, Matt and Jonny are just a phone call away. For that matter, with the Internet, cell phones, email, and texting I am just a few button clicks away!
Wishing you summer fun!
 - Mike Laster, Council Member - District J

Hurricane Readiness - People with Disabilities
Do you or someone in your household have a disability that needs special planning for an emergency? Now is the time to formulate your plan for hurricane readiness.
One suggestion is to form a team of "Hurricane Buddies" or "Hurricane Helpers" of people you trust. You'll also need to tailor your emergency kit's contents to ensure you have all the supplies, medications, and clothing you'll need. Ideally, you should plan for 2 weeks disruption from your normal routine.
Individuals with access and functional needs should pre-register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistant Registry (STEAR) by dialing 211 or the Houston OEM's page on STEAR.
You should also prepare your home for emergencies. Make sure that any adaptive assistance devices are in good working order. Make sure that your fire alarms have fresh batteries. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, the Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities can provide you with a free visual fire alarm.
Additional information on preparing for an emergency and Hurricane can be found on these websites:
The Greater Harris County 911 Emergency Network offers an emergency text number (442911) to contact a 9-1-1 call center in Harris and Fort Bend Counties. The 442911 Text service is ONLY available for all residents who LIVE OR WORK within the GHC 9-1-1 territory - all cities and counties wholly or partially within Harris and Fort Bend Counties and the unincorporated area of both counties. You can also sign up to receive text notifications for emergency alerts.
