We urge everyone to use caution and take alternate routes to avoid traffic and smoke.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured fire fighters, their families, and the Houston Fire Department.

June is Caribbean Heritage Month . . .

One of the endlessly fun aspects of serving as Council Member for District J is being able to meet and work with people from all over the planet.  I have said it a million times, the residents of District J hail from every corner of the globe.  With that in mind, District J is the perfect place to celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month this June.  The Institute of Caribbean Studies has been a powerful advocate for seeking recognition of the month of June as National Caribbean Heritage Month.  Like so many of our neighbors Caribbean-Americans have made significant contributions to our state and nation, especially in the areas of government, business, education, the arts, and community development. What better time to celebrate the cultural and historical contributions of our Caribbean neighbors.  I hope you will join me in celebrating June, 2013, as Caribbean-American Heritage Month.

Thanks for a Job Well Done . . . Part 2

In our newsletter of May 17, we paused to congratulate Captain Jennifer Evans on her new assignment and thank her for her service as command officer of the Midwest Command staff.

This week we extend another round of congratulations for new assignments and thanks to Captain Steven Spears formerly of the South Gessner Command, Captain Mike Martin formerly of the Southwest Command, and Captain Mike Skillern formerly of the Westside Command.  District J is grateful for their work in their respective command areas and wishes each captain much success as they move forward to new assignments.

Welcome to the District J Team . . .

I am pleased to welcome Jonny Flores to your District J office staff.  Mr. Flores will serve as Agenda and Policy Director for the district.  He comes to us with an array of past public service credits having gained experience in working with the Texas Health Department, as a Harris County probation officer and as a licensed police officer.  He is a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio and earned a Masters of Public Administration from St. Mary's University.  Mr. Flores gained legislative experience by interning with the United States Senate in Washington DC and with the City Council of San Antonio.  I trust you will join me in welcoming him to the District J team.
