Guatemalan President Visits Our Workshop
in San Pedro

Over 100 people - girls, mothers, local staff and our team of volunteers - were thrilled to meet President Otto Perez Molina, up close and personal, during his surprise visit to our leadership workshop. Easy enough to tell what's going on in the video here, even though it's en espaol.

Notes on who's who: Local director, Judith Castaon, is to the president's left. Lucy Fuentes, wearing our t-shirt, and Silvia Rivera, both local Board members, are to his right. Keep an eye out for Tracy when she appears.

Las Hermanitas is Going Strong

Our September visit confirmed the effectiveness of the Girls Club program, Las Hermanitas (Big & Little Sisters), and it's impact on the girls' success in school. Here's what they have to say about it.

(See translation, below).

Las Hermanitas 2012
Las Hermanitas - Santa Teresa

Britney: My name is Britney, and this is my little sister Gaby. What I like the most about visiting Gaby every Saturday is helping her with her assignments. It is really helpful for me too, because it helps me remember what I learned in school when I was her age.

Narrator: Gaby, how do you like having a Big Sister?

Gaby: Very much, because she teaches me about math, reading, writing, and drawing.

Narrator: So tell me, are you a tutor and little sister only, or are you also good friends?

Both: Good friends!

Check out our blog to learn more about Britney and Gaby, the President's visit, and the rest of our September Field Trip.
WWT Awarded Grants to Expand Las Hermanitas

WWT was awarded $16,000 from the List Family Foundation and $1,250 from the Boulder Rotary to support the expansion of Las Hermanitas during 2013. This means we can add 25 more pairs of "sisters" in each of the 3 villages where the program is already successful, plus start programs in 2 more villages with 25 pairs of "sisters"in each one. Once in place we will have about 400 girls and 400 mothers participating Las Hermanitas.

Hats off to our Board members, Nan Stout and Nicky Wolman along with co founder Tracy Bachrach Ehlers for opening this relationship with the List Family Foundation.

WWT Co-sponsors Local Observance - First Ever International Day of the Girl

WWT made history as a co-sponsor of the Boulder event on the first annual International Day of the Girl on October 11. Advancing the worldwide theme of Girls Education was right in line with our Manda Tu Hija a la Escuela (Send Your Daughter to School) campaign.

Leadership Institute and Girls Clubs featured in print and online

New Moon, a magazine and website by and for girls 9-14 years old, featured our Leadership Institute and a Girls Club member in their September/October issue.  Carla is 12 years old and lives in San Pedro Petz. Read the the article and check out New Moon, too. We brought copies to SPS and although the girls do not read English, they were certainly thrilled with what they saw.  We even got to present a copy to the President!
