Greetings from Diana Curtin, Executive Director
Greetings!
As we near the end of another very successful year, I find myself reflecting on the unique value Chop's Teen Club brings to our community. My perspective is not only from the point of view as the Executive Director of Chop's, but also as an invested parent and resident who cares greatly about the overall health of our community and its future success. This brings me to the "WHY" of what we do at Chop's. Our "WHY" is because all teens deserve to have a safe and positive place where they are connected, inspired and empowered with opportunities for success. Even teens who have these opportunities at home need a safe place to individuate, and have their values reinforced. Part of what makes Chop's so special is the rich and diverse population of teens we serve. Our youth mentoring and program staff is dedicated to the success of our teens and everything we do is based on our belief in them. Santa Rosa is indeed blessed to have such a unique resource dedicated to the success of our teens, because when teens thrive, our entire community is healthier and stronger.
We hope you'll join us by becoming a "Friend of Chop's" and be part of a growing team of supporters who believe in our teens and understand they are indeed the face of our community's future. Please read more below.
Sincerely,
Diana Curtin
Executive Director

Become a Friend of Chop's!
Each day at Chop's Teen Club we have the opportunity and the challenge to make a positive impact on our community's teens. You may know that we provide a safe, fun and productive environment for teens, but that's only the beginning. For just $1 per year, teens gain so much more than a membership. They gain independence, confidence, and the encouragement to try new and different things. They become leaders, volunteers, artists, athletes, musicians, chefs, and technology wizards. They are encouraged and empowered to tap into their true potential.
While we receive 70% of our budget through the DeMeo Grant, we do need to raise the remaining 30%, or $270,000 annually to continue to offer a low membership fee as well as provide quality programs that teens enjoy and connect with.
This is where you come in! As a fellow community member, we invite you to become a "Friend of Chop's" and join the team who believes in the power of our teens to become the next generation of Santa Rosa citizens to positively tend to our community. It's no secret that when teens thrive, the entire community benefits. Please consider a donation to assist us in providing an ongoing platform for success of our teens.

Back to the Future A Huge Success!
Our second annual Back to the Future...Come Back to Lena's for the Future of Our Teens fundraising event was a huge success. Two hundred guests were treated to an evening that included appetizers prepared and served by our Teen Catering Crew, a dance
performance by the Nordquist Junior Dance Instructors, a musical performance by the Elsie Allen High School Drum Line, and dinner prepared by the Maria Carrillo Culinary Arts
students. New this year was the presentation of our Spirit of Charles DeMeo Award to John Bribiescas, former Santa Rosa
High School teacher, founder of Schools Plus and former Chop's Teen Club board member for his years of service to the youth of our community. Our board members and staff were

overjoyed at the connection our guests made to our mission and the importance of having a resource like Chop's Teen Club in and for our community. We say a heartfelt thank you to all of our sponsors and attendees, who together helped us raise $77,000 of the $250,000 needed to fund our programs and mentoring staff.

Teen Member Highlighted in Press Democrat
Please join us in congratulating teen member Lily Thrailkill, who was recently the featured teen in the Press Democrat's Teen Life page. Lily is also our current Honored Member. (Read more about that below) Lily is an excellent example of a teen member who joined Chop's and connected herself to so many of the programs we offer, and doing what we like to call "tapping into her true potential" as she explored new areas of interest, made many friends from several different schools, as well as discovering a new niche for her passion of volunteerism through her work with Chop's Creek Clean Up Program. Interact Club & Youth Empowerment Council
Chop's Teen Club has its very own Interact Club, where students from all middle and high schools come together to develop leadership skills. Chop's Interact Club is unique, as most Interact Clubs are based on school campuses and membership is for students of that school only. We offer the opportunity for students of all schools to collaborate. Sponsored by Santa Rosa Rotary West, Interact Club commits to complete two community service projects each year. Currently the club regularly visits the Brookdale Senior Community where the students enjoy playing games and engaging in good conversation with the seniors. Soon you will see them ringing bells to help the Salvation Army raise funds during the holiday season. And finally, they are beginning a new project called Project Inspire, where the club will adopt a tree in Santa Rosa to hang thoughtful words of inspiration with the goal of spreading hope and brightness throughout Santa Rosa.

The Youth Empowerment Council is a partnership between Chop's Teen Club and Tomorrow's Leaders Today. The purpose is to provide a forum for youth voice in our community, to utilize their leadership skills through various projects, and to make a lasting impact on Sonoma County by aligning themselves with local government initiatives and by holding seats on various task groups. The council currently has students representing five high schools in Santa Rosa and Petaluma, with the goal of representation from all districts. The YEC is currently working on two projects. The first is helping to facilitate Chop's Teen Club's 2014 Youth Empowerment & Leadership Conference for middle school students, and the other is aiding teens of Sonoma County gain a voice in our community by securing two seats on the Health Action Board.

Honored Members
Lily Thrailkill
Lily is being honored because at just thirteen years old she is has become a leader amongst her peers. Lily is the first to offer someone a hand, teach a friend how to do something, or just simply strike up a conversation with a new member. Instead of a birthday party Lily asked her parents if she could come to the middle school dance. Lily loves Chop's so much that she rides a razor for almost 40 minutes just to get here, and instead of sitting around she is constantly asking the staff if there is anything she can do. In addition to helping out around the building, Lily also keeps our community clean by volunteering with the Creek Clean Up Program. She has racked up so many hours at Creek Clean Up that she was recently honored at the First Saturday Clean Up Reception. Lily is currently the leading Chop's member for volunteer hours, and was recently featured in Press Democrat's Teen Life page. (see article above) On behalf of Chop's and the Santa Rosa Creek Watershed, we want to thank you Lily for bringing your joy and positivity to our community.
Brandon Phan
Brandon is a valuable member at Chop's because he has grown so much in the two and a half years that he has been a member. When he first arrived at Chop's he was a shy and quiet seventh grader. Now he describes himself as a "social butterfly." Brandon is also one of our most experienced Catering Crew participants. He has worked everything from the Art Gala to Open House to Spring Break. He never missed an opportunity to get into the kitchen and learn from Chef Connie. He says "Connie made me into a better guy in the kitchen, but also a better guy in general." He is very grateful for everything Connie has done to help him along the way, and he misses her, as we all do. Luckily Brandon will be around for at least three more years, so that we can continue to recognize him as an integral part of our community.
