Partnership Industry Network Meetings Hosted at USM's Gulf Park Campus

USM's Department of Industrial Engineering Technology (IET) and Logistics, Trade, and Transportation (LTT) hosted a meeting in October and December of a Partnership Industry Network Program designed to help students connect with industry leaders.

The Partnership Industry Network (PIN) seeks to increase the number of USM interns working with Mississippi businesses and connect local businesses with USM's talent pool. It also offers to give professional leaders the chance to work with USM to help build educational programs that will make students into ideal candidates for future employment.

A keynote address was delivered in October featuring guest speaker, Alan Fitzmorris, who shared information about INCOSE Certification Process. The December meeting featured speaker, Mike Salvetti, who shared information about SOLE Certification Process.

US DOT University Transportation Center Program Receives Funding

The US Congress recently passed the $305 billion, five-year Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act transportation bill.  The legislation included $377.55 million for the university transportation center (UTC) program.  This included $72.5m in 2015 increasing to $77.5m annually in 2020.  In the past round of funding 33 UTC consortiums were funded.

The University of South Mississippi is currently part of the National Center for Freight and Infrastructure Research and Education (CFIRE), which is a Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC) funded by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA).  The consortium of universities is led by University of Wisconsin-Madison with University of Memphis leading the Southern Hub, which includes Southern Miss, Vanderbilt, and University of Alabama-Huntsville.

This funding has allowed the universities to fund numerous students, educational events, and conduct important research on reshoring, short-line railroads, the impact of the Panama Canal, the transportation impact of fracking, and other economic competitiveness freight issues.
