Startup Weekend to be held in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Innovate Mississippi announces that the next Startup Weekend will be held November 6-8 on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) in Hattiesburg and in a partnership with the university's Trent Lott National Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship. Powered by Google for Entrepreneurs, Startup Weekends are intense 54-hour events that operate worldwide, bringing together serial entrepreneurs, programmers, developers, graphic artists and business-minded people for weekends of company creation.

The mission of Startup Weekend is to provide a high-energy, collaborative environment that facilitates experiential education and meaningful connections. Participants also build long-lasting relationships and may even walk away with a job or an investment.

MEDC Now Offering Tuition Scholarships
MEDC (Mississippi Economic Development Council) will be accepting applications for tuition scholarships for professional development courses. A listing of all training events the scholarship committee has selected as importance for members of MEDC to attend in order to improve professional capability in Economic Development is available for download. MEDC believes that continued professional training is vital for successful community and Economic Development in Mississippi. New Tourism Faculty with a Passion for Food
Prof. Juwon Choi joined the Economic Development, Tourism, and Sports Management Department this fall. She has a strong commitment to the foodservice industry. As a foodie, she is very bold to explore different foods all around the world and also loves to cook. She worked several years in the industry as a restaurant manager, a trainer, and a consultant. Her research themes include food tourism, services marketing/management, and business ethics in the hospitality and tourism field. Another area of her research interest involves ascertaining the most effective ways of promoting small food businesses to boost their sales and subsequently the economy of their locality. She has numerous publications including "Outcomes of Destination Marketing Organization Website Navigation: The Role of Telepresence", which has just been published by the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing. Currently, she is an ad-hoc reviewer for three professional journals and a registered ServSafe examination proctor. She is an ABD in the Department of Hospitality Management and Dietetics at Kansas State University. She earned her MS degree in culinary and foodservice management from Sejong University and BS in mathematics in Kyunghee University both in South Korea. Juwon and her two-year-old son are living in Hattiesburg.
