DHL plans $108 million upgrade to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky shipping hub

Driven by the fast growth of international e-commerce shipments, transport and logistics firm DHL Express will spend $108 million to expand its U.S. airfreight hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, the company said Thursday.

The investment will allow Bonn-based DHL to keep up with the significant growth of business-to-consumer shipments triggered by the popularity of international online commerce, according to Verena Gross, the company's communications manager for the Americas.

DHL will add gates to accommodate additional aircraft; increase warehouse space at the airport; and install advanced equipment for package sortation and aircraft loading and unloading. The expansion is expected to be finished in 2016, the company said in a statement.

Governor Bryant to sign bond bill at Ingalls

Gov. Phil Bryant will be at Ingalls Shipbuilding Thursday to ceremonially sign the bond bill that authorizes money for capital improvements to the shipyard.

Bryant officially signed the legislation in April, shortly after the session ended.

The $249 million bill includes $20 million for the state-owned shipyard, which Ingalls leases.

Ingalls is Mississippi's largest private employer, with more than 11,000 people on payroll. Ingalls' parent company, Huntington Ingalls Industries, is the U.S.' largest military shipbuilder.

The money will, according to an Ingalls press release, "help maintain jobs and supplier opportunities in Pascagoula and across Mississippi for years to come. The Mississippi/Ingalls capital investment will fund innovative shipyard upgrades that will allow Ingalls to remain competitive. This project will ensure that Ingalls Shipbuilding remains at the forefront of the military shipbuilding industry, and that the livelihood and quality of life enjoyed by thousands of Mississippians will continue into the future."

High-tech leaders seek cost cuts with shorter supply chains

Buffeted by rising transportation costs and increasing customer demands for fast delivery, high-tech executives are pulling back from a long-held strategy of offshoring their supply chains, according to a survey released today by consultancy IDC Manufacturing Insights.

Polled about their plans for building supply chain networks to support manufacturing, 47 percent said they continue to pursue offshoring strategies to reduce labor costs. However, a growing portion of those executives are taking the opposite path, positioning their supply chains closer to local resources and markets to cut transportation and inventory carrying costs, reduce transit times, protect intellectual property rights, and improve customer service.

Tesla Motors co-founder wants to electrify commercial trucks

Twelve years ago, Ian Wright and some fellow engineers launched Tesla Motors, a Silicon Valley company that has helped jumpstart the market for electric cars.

Now, the Tesla co-founder wants to electrify noisy, gas-guzzling trucks that deliver packages, haul garbage and make frequent stops on city streets.

His latest venture, Wrightspeed, doesn't make the whole truck. Rather it sells electric powertrains that can be installed on medium-and heavy-duty commercial vehicles, making them cleaner, quieter and more energy-efficient.

Carrier Truman preps for hastened deployment

ABOARD THE CARRIER HARRY S. TRUMAN - This flattop crew was hit late last year with news of an expedited deployment, shortened availability and accelerated training.

Give 'em hell ... and they will give it right back.

The crew has jumped through countless hoops and hit deadlines to get the ship upgraded, repaired and ready for its fall deployment. This required some creative scheduling and "coloring outside of the lines," said Lt. Cmdr. Randy Harmon, Truman's training officer.
