In Memory of Chuck Ueltschey

Our economic development profession lost one of our treasures this month - Chuck Ueltschey, who retired from Mississippi Power Company's Economic Development Group passed away.  Chuck was instrumental in making USM's Economic Development Department what it is today.  He was tireless in his efforts to make sure we had a nationally recognized program.  He touched many lives by giving us a week every year to head up our True South (then New South) program.  He always brought his sense of humor and love of economic development to the training.  His work focused on making people's lives better.  Chuck's attitude about the importance of what economic developers do was contagious.  Many left the week-long training with a renewed sense of purpose.

Chuck's impact was captured by his and our friend, Angie Cognevich Collins:
"Chuck was the epitome of what a community developer is supposed to be.  He had such a passion for what he did and that passion spilled over to the ones that had the opportunity to know him and work with him.  I am honored to have been one of those people.  I knew I could always count on him for words of wisdom. He was my friend and mentor.  We shared so many good times and lots of laughter. I will miss my buddy."

We are establishing a scholarship in Chuck's name to be given to a deserving graduate student every year in the Masters in Economic Development program.  We will do our best to choose a student who reflects the same determination we saw from Chuck, to make the world a better place for everyone.  Contributions can be made to the USM Foundation - Chuck Ueltschey.

Chinese Delegation Visits Southern Miss
A three-member visiting delegation from Linyi University including their Chancellor recently visited USM to strengthen the ties between the two universities and to move discussions forward on further collaborations. Linyi University, located in Shandong Province, has more than 35,000 full-time students and is one of the few universities in China with a School of Logistics. In addition to expanding opportunities for Chinese language courses for USM students, another crucial benefit would be the promotion and enhancement of economic trade and development for companies and organizations in China and Mississippi. The People's Republic of China is Mississippi's third-largest trading partner with the Mississippi exporting over $1 billion worth of goods to the country in 2014.
Lott Center Staff Facilitates Madison County Strategic Plan Review

Madison County Business League & Foundation contracted services for a facilitator to provide a formal review of its long-range strategic plan. Dr. Shannon Campbell, Director of the USM Lott National Center, served as facilitator for the review designed to reflect on the status and accomplishments of the plan adopted in 2012. The review provided an opportunity for various sub-committees to review their goals, outcomes, and status of strategic actions committed in the original plan. Each committee identified what tasks were accomplished, what tasks still need to be implemented and what new actions need to be considered for adoption. The Madison County Strategic Plan is a ten-year plan designed to address transportation, quality of life, education, workforce, and healthcare needs of the county. For more information about the plan, contact Jan Collins, Executive Director of Madison County Business League & Foundation at [email protected].

If your community, company, or organization has needs for a facilitator to conduct strategic planning, leadership development, or project management sessions, feel free to contact us at the Lott National Center, 601.266.6239 or [email protected].
