Mississippi Poultry Industry's Hub System Behind Today's Success

To understand how Mississippi's poultry industry has advanced to become the state's top agricultural money maker, think of the hub system the airlines use, says Mark Leggett, Mississippi Poultry Association president.

Developed during the 1960s and '70s, the hub system, or what the industry calls vertical integration, ended segmentation of the industry and ensured a way to meet consumer demand that long ago outpaced that of beef and pork nationally and is projected to surpass pork worldwide in the next five years.

Is Business as we Know it Going to go the Way of the Dodo?

Vivek Wadhwa of Singularity University returns talks to The Big Think as part of today's featured video interview. The topic isdisruption: the phenomenon that occurs when radical innovations ignite revolutionary or evolutionary change in an industry. A simple example of this is what services like Lyft and Uber have done to disrupt the taxi industry. On a larger scale, cell phone technology has disrupted communications to the point that the private landline has gone the way of the dodo. Wadhwa explains in the clip below that our current era of exciting tech innovations will cause similar disruptions in pretty much every current industry.

Report Considers Current State And Future Opportunities For Self-Driving Vehicles

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and driverless forklifts have been proving their worth in warehouse operations for some time now. But that's just the tip of the automated-vehicle iceberg when it comes to logistics applications, according to a recent report from DHL.

The report, "Self-Driving Vehicles in Logistics," begins by explaining how automated, or robotic, vehicles work; their potential benefits; and the regulations and policies that influence their acceptance and adoption. The report then reviews current uses in military, consumer, automotive industry, and public transportation environments. Finally, it highlights four logistics applications: autonomous transport and assisted picking in warehouses; autonomous outdoor logistics, such as airport, yard, and marine terminal operations; assisted highway trucking and convoying; and "last mile" delivery.

NAVAIR Logistics Pros Tackle Obsolescence

When PMA-201 needed a component for its nearly 40-year-old Harpoon missile test set, it turned to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) Obsolescence Management Team (OMT) for help in its quest.
A part from a diagnostic test set had failed, and a needed replacement part proved hard to find since one hadn't been manufactured since 2002. "We haven't had one of these parts fail in a very long time," said Pat Brannigan, Precision Strike Weapons Program Office (PMA-201) product support manager.

DNA Marking Capability

The agency started performing an in-house microcircuit anti-counterfeit initiative, dubbed DNA marking. The capability is designed to validate the authenticity of purchased microcircuits while increasing their reliability throughout the supply chain. The new quality control measures will be conducted at DLA's Electronics Product Test Center at DLA Land and Maritime. "Microcircuits are integrated in many of the weapon systems operated by our military services, so securing dependable suppliers is crucial to sustaining our elite mission-ready forces," said DLA Land and Maritime Commander Navy Rear Adm. John King.
