Interactive Map of New Deal Economic Development Projects
An crucial component of establishing a sense of place and authenticity of community is preserving and showcasing a community's history. An important time for Mississippi's development was the "New Deal" era from 1933-43, which resulted in a constellation of federally sponsored programs that put millions of jobless Americans back to work and helped to revive a moribund economy. Mississippi was the beneficiary of over 150 of these projects. Now the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) at UC Berkeley has established the Living New Deal project to document and record these economic development projects. It includes interactive maps and descriptions of these projects. For instance, the Hattiesburg Homesteads was one of five "industrial communities" established in Mississippi as part of the Resettlement Administration. Twenty four frame clapboard units were built at a cost of $3,152 per unit. The tool can assist with historic preservation and provide insights on our economic development past.

USM Expanding Human Capital Outreach Services in Madison County
Canton, MS- Madison County Economic Development Authority (MCEDA) announced Mississippi's first Bio-Medical Collaboratory on October 24, 2014 in which USM's Workplace Learning and Performance Institute will provide services focused on human capital and workforce capabilities. The creation of The Mississippi Bio-Medical Business Collaboratory (MBBC), located at 152 Watford Parkway Drive in Canton, was made possible through the efforts of MCEDA and Governor Bryant and the legislature's creation of the MS Health Care Industry Zone Act.
The facility was designed to foster relationships, cooperation, and innovation among healthcare related companies operating within the facility. The ultimate goal of the Collaboratory model is to help create the sustainable higher paying healthcare and bio-medical jobs. Tenant companies of the facility are/will be focused on providing advanced healthcare services, medical training and simulations, long term care IT asset management, pharmacy services, research and testing, and medical equipment manufacturing.
As the principal human capital development advisor for the Global Training Institute, the Workplace Learning and Performance Institute will create shared understanding of human capital solutions, explore new ideas and apply them at the Madison Bio-Medical Business Collaboratory. The overarching goal for the Global Training Institute/WLPI partnership is to build workforce capabilities and maximize human capital investments for the Mississippi Bio-Medical Business Collaboratory and its partners.
