It's Time to Make Your Economic Development Marketing Strategy More Effective

The world is more complex today than it has ever been in our time on this planet. In addition, you have more on your plate today than you have ever had; EcD is growing in competitive intensity. As we wish for simpler, things get more complex. As I start most of my talks, "The system you have in place is designed to give you exactly the results you are getting now. If you want to achieve something different you have to do something different; which usually includes think something different first."

Maybe it's time to take time out to learn something new. Wouldn't it be good to know what works when it comes to the link between EcD actions and results and especially why they work? If you want to improve both your number of at bats (recruitment/expansion opportunities) and your batting average (wins) then there is still time to enroll in ED 646 Marketing and Business Development for Economic Development this fall

It will be taught by Dr. Bill Smith and reflective practitioner Robert Ingram.  Dr. Smith combines industry and consulting experience with more than 30 years of teaching at Southern Miss.  He has taught professional selling, creative marketing, marketing research, and the capstone marketing management course during his tenure. Robert Ingram combines experience as a Mayor with being an EcD practitioner and now consultant. Together we want to help you determine the correct strategy for your Economic Development Organization to follow to achieve your goals.

The first class webinar is Thursday, August 21st 7-9pm and the in-person portion is Saturday August 23rd and Sunday August 24th at the Trent Lott Center in Hattiesburg.  The balance of the class is online.

Chance to Meet with Department Chair in Memphis at SEDC

Dr. Bill Smith, Professor and Chair of Economic Development & Tourism in the College of Business will be attending the Southern Economic Development Council (SEDC) annual conference in Memphis from August 3-5, 2014.  He will be there meeting with alumni and talking with practitioners about the new program curriculum and format, which was unveiled last fall.

The new curriculum focuses on local, regional, and state level economic development based on the three legged stool of economic development 1) business attraction, 2) business expansion and retention (with the possibility of contraction), and 3) small business and entrepreneurial development. These three legs stand on a base of community development. The new hybrid on-line format, including weekend classes, is designed for the working professional who still wants the networking opportunities of the traditional MSED program. If you are at SEDC, Bill would like to talk with you.

Economic Developer's Day at the Neshoba County Fair
A contingent from USM and MSED alumni attended the Economic Developer's Day 2015 at the Neshoba County Fair.  Dubbed, Mississippi's Giant House Party, the weeklong fair fosters political, agricultural, and social exchanges of knowledge and ideas. The Neshoba County Fair is the political forum for the State of Mississippi. State, Local, and on occasion National politicians come to the fair to make their speeches at the Pavilion in Founders Square. In his speech Governor Phil Bryant touted the state's ranking from Area Development Magazine. Mississippi was one of 20 states to receive the Silver Shovel award. He cited a number of companies that are expanding or relocating to Mississippi. He mentioned Weyerhaeuser investing $57 million to expand their mill and Mars Food North America, maker of Uncle Ben's rice, in Greenville.
