Alumni Spotlight with Roberto Gallardo

MSED alum and adjunct MSED faculty, Dr. Roberto Gallardo has an engineering degree from Mexico and came to Southern Miss in 2003. Shortly before graduating with his master's in Economic Development, he got a job with the Industrial Development department of the Delta Council in Stoneville, MS. Dr. Gallardo conducted economic development data analysis for the delta region (18 counties) and assisted the director with RFP's and marketing. After almost three years, Dr. Gallardo decided to pursue his PhD in Public Policy & Administration at Mississippi State University. While completing his PhD he worked at the Southern Rural Development Center managing community and economic development projects with a local, regional, and national focus.

Dr. Gallardo completed his PhD in May of 2011 and in 2013 joined the Center for Technology Outreach where he manages a statewide broadband adoption and use program. His research interests include industrial cluster analysis and broadband use for community and economic development. He recently applied and obtained a designation from the Intelligent Community Forum, a think-tank based in New York, for the MSU Extension Service to be an Intelligent Community Institute. This institute will educate community leaders and residents on the benefits of the digital or broadband economy and how, through an in-depth assessment, to better capitalize on broadband infrastructure for community economic development. Knowledge generated by research conducted at the institute will be disseminated throughout Mississippi, the United States, and the world relying on the land-grant system as well as the Intelligent Community Forum worldwide network.

Dr. Gallardo will be teaching the ED 727 Sustainability and Community Development class  for the MSED program this fall.

Updated U.S Interactive Cluster Mapping Database Launched
The new U.S. Cluster Mapping Project, which is a national initiative that provides open data about regional clusters and economies to support U.S. business, innovation and policy, has been launched.  The project is led by Professor Michael Porter through Harvard Business School's Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration. The database shows Mississippi having a cluster portfolio of 14 traded clusters including hospitality & tourism, automotive, furniture, wood products, livestock, downstream chemicals, and water transportation.  The database allows you do dig deeper into the cluster to show sub-clusters such as automotive parts, gasoline engines and engine parts, motor vehicles, small vehicles, military vehicles and tanks, metal mills and foundries for the automotive cluster. The data appears to be limited to secondary data, but it does provide an interesting snapshot of clusters.
