ELECTED OFFICIALS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

Basic Community Economic Development 
for Elected Officials Workshop
 
Hattiesburg, MS - December 11, 2013 - The Trent Lott National Center will host a one-day elected official training on basic community economic development. This introductory course emphasizes elected official's role in community and economic development. The invitation is extended to Mississippi mayors, aldermen and alderwomen, financial officers, supervisors, legislators, and other city/county government officials. MISSISSIPPI CAREERS OF TOMORROW PROGRAM


The U.S. Department of Labor awarded a Mississippi Careers of Tomorrow (MCOT) job-training grant to Central Mississippi Planning and Development District (CMPDD). The grant has been extended to include the entire state.   CMPDD is actively recruiting qualified employers and workers to participate in the Mississippi Careers of Tomorrow program. Employers who hire qualified workers in targeted occupations are eligible for financial assistance. The primary goal of MCOT is to train eligible individuals to meet industry skill shortages in the high-growth information technology and advanced manufacturing/engineering industries and occupations. MSED STUDENT, DAVID "SAM" LEIVA, DEFENDS THESIS 


MSED student, David "Sam" Leiva successfully defended his thesis A Critical Examination of Green Economic Development as a Post - Disaster Recovery Approach: The Case of Greensburg, Kansas Five Years Later.  After being decimated by a tornado in 2008, Greensburg was rebuilt using the latest green planning approaches garnering international attention. Millions and public and private funds were invested in green economic development for this small rural Kansas community. It is held up as the model disaster recovery approach by the planning community and the federal government. Disaster impacted communities such as Joplin, MO and Yazoo City, MS have looked to Greensburg for recovery inspiration. VIEW MORE.

MEDC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM REMINDER 


MEDC tuition scholarships are being accepted for professional development courses in 2014.

 

The list of approved courses have been announced and includes; Chamber Institute, Community Development Institute, Economic Development Institute, the True South Economic Development Course, and the National Development Council Economic Development courses.  Thanks to the generous contributions of the Electric Power Associations of Mississippi, Entergy Mississippi, Mississippi Power Company, Tennessee Valley Authority, Mississippi Development Authority and MEDC.

The Strengthening Mississippi Academic Research Through Business Act (SMART Business Act), as established by Mississippi law, is intended to meet the following goals: stimulate private investment in research and development through partnerships with Mississippi public universities; increase the competitiveness of Mississippi companies; and improve the economy of the State of Mississippi.
