HEALTHCARE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Blueprint MS HealthCare The Trent Lott National Center is adding a new "twist" to its areas of focus: health-related economic development. For the last few months, Dr. Shannon Campbell, Director of TLNC, and Dr. Mike Forster, Dean of College of Health, have been collaborating to establish an internal university partnership in which healthcare and economic development merge. The first step in the partnership included the TLNC hiring a graduate assistant, Marla Stuart, who is pursuing a Master of Public Health degree in the College of Health. Ms. Stuart will focus on health-related economic development research from the issues identified in the Blueprint Mississippi Healthcare plan.

On Wednesday, August 21, 2013, USM hosted business leader, John Turner, to share lessons learned as Chair of the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) Healthcare Task Force and to begin learning more about what role USM can play in implementing the study's action items. Mr. Turner served on the leadership council, which chaired the formation of Blueprint MS Healthcare. His visit to USM opened new dialogue about the need for innovative new approaches to blending healthcare and economic development.

MSED STUDENT ASSIST IN STATEWIDE UAS EFFORT

Leiva and Raj D.E. "Sam" Leiva, a graduate student in the Master's of Science in Economic Development program, recently took part in Mississippi's statewide effort to land one of six nationwide sites to test unmanned aircraft systems, commonly known as drones. Mandated by Congress, the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to make its decision by year's end on the site locations.

Leiva, who works at Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, is part of the installation's Unmanned Aircraft Systems FAA Test Site Project Management Team. Since October, he has worked closely with aviation experts and UAS private companies helping them fly within the post's restricted airspace.

USDA SEEKS APPLICANTS

USDA USDA Seeks Applicants for Funds to Assist Rural Micro-entrepreneurs. Last week Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the availability of loan and grant funds to support rural micro-entrepreneurs and microenterprises.

"By supporting very small business enterprises through the Rural Micro-entrepreneur Assistance Program, USDA has been able to direct assistance to small firms that otherwise might not be able to obtain credit," said Vilsack. "This program has shown that even a modest investment of federal dollars can have a huge impact for the local economy in small towns across rural America." LEARN MORE
