COMBINING LOGISTICS AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO START A NEW CAREER

Wanting to make a career switch from retail to the fast growing logistics field, Joey Holder decided to get a   Master of Science in Logistics, Trade & Transportation (MSLTT) with a Certificate in Economic Development and this paid off. The Southern Miss Business Administration ('12) alum began working with Eagle Transportation, LLC, headquartered in Hattiesburg  in March of this year. Eagle Transportation, LLC is a 3PL (third-party logistics company), that offer freight management solutions for companies throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. As Logistics Coordinator in the Dry Freight Division he manages freight for many industrial customers including steel and plastic pipe manufacturers, lumber and forestry companies, customers that need heavy equipment moved and many more. Eagle also has a refrigerated or "reefer" freight division and Intermodal freight division. Additionally, they offer their own Factoring Company and offer insurance for their carriers under Eagle Insurance. "Basically, if you can get it on a truck we will get it to where it needs to go, safely and securely or if you can't find a truck, we can do that as well". 

GARRETT WRIGHT HIRED AS ADP PROJECT MANAGER 


Garrett Wright, a December 2012 graduate of the Masters of Economic Development at the University of Southern Mississippi, recently accepted a project manager position with the Area Development Partnership (ADP).  This position is responsible for managing a variety of economic development projects. This entails both existing business and business recruitment projects.  At the ADP he will report and directly work with Chad Newell and J.R. Robinson both graduates of the Master's program for Economic development at Southern Miss. The Area Development Partnership (ADP) is a non-profit regional chamber of commerce, community development, and economic development organization representing the Greater Hattiesburg Region, which serves Forrest, Lamar, and Perry counties.  
       Before starting at the ADP, Garrett interned in Washington, D.C. with Congressman Steven M. Palazzo since January 2013. In addition, Garrett also interned as part of his master's program requirements at the Mississippi Development Authority in the summer of 2012.  Garrett is originally from Gulfport, MS. MSED MOVE TO THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS APPROVED


At the April meeting, the Mississippi Institutions for Higher Learning (IHL) approved the move of the Masters of Science in Economic Development Program (MSED) to the College of Business from the College of Science and Technology effective July 1, 2013. MSED will be combined with the Casino, Hospitality & Tourism Management Department to form the new Economic Development & Tourism Department. Dr. Faye Gilbert will become the new COB Dean on July 1st as well.
