MSED USES AND EDUCATES ON SOCIAL MEDIA AS AN ED TOOL

Social Media (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter) is garnering attention from the economic development community and is part of the Southern Miss economic development education.  Companies can use social media to gauge the environment of a community while in the site selection process, connect with other businesses in a relocation area of interest, recruit workers once relocated, and keep informed of a new community's interests and desires. This semester Mark Weilenman of the Marketing Alliance talked to a class about these issues and how economic developers can use websites, social media, newsletters, and Keynote. The program also has its own Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter sites where job announcements, student and alumni updates, economic development news, networking events, and other points of interests to students, alumni, and friends of the program can be found.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STUDENT ATTENDS APA CONFERENCE

D.E. "Sam" Leiva, a graduate student in the Master's of Science in Economic Development program, attended the Mississippi chapter of the American Planning Association 2012 Annual Fall Conference held in Meridian last month. The conference, "Creating Sense of Place: Collaborative, Sustainable & Innovative," brought together several different fields that contribute to the development process. "The intersection where all of these disciplines meet is the most exciting one, and it offers the most promise in getting development right -- the first time -- and correcting market inefficiencies with holistic approaches," he says. Here Leiva poses with Dr. Vicki Mack, data dissemination specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau's Atlanta region, and Dr. Rhonda Phillips, professor at Arizona State University's School of Community Resources and Development, after a workshop. Phillips is an alum of the Southern Miss Economic Development program.
