Happy New Year! How do you welcome it? For many, the upcoming year brings new beginnings, fresh starts, wishes, pursued dreams and who can forget those fabulous resolutions! Whatever yours may be...we hope that you achieve all of your aspirations in 2016.

We'd especially like to express our sincerest gratitude for your support whether you've volunteered, provided an in-kind gift, or financially supported Mychal's Learning Place. A major 2015 achievement was the purchase of our Hawthorne building.  We couldn't have done it without your generosity for which we are extremely grateful.

Path to Independence Adult Day Program MLP Logo - vector
OPEN HOUSE

A brief presentation will take place at 12:00pm on both days to provide an overview of the program. Group tours of the program will take place before and after the presentation. Current and prospective families are more than welcome to attend.

Mychal's Path to Independence is an Adult Day Program for individuals with developmental disabilities ages 18-30. Program hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30am-2:00pm. The primary goal is to prepare the students for adulthood through educational/pre-vocational life skills training that will foster appropriate behaviors, independence, employment, volunteerism and increased self-esteem.

Our goal is to provide our students with the training and support necessary to live independently with support services and secure employment or volunteer placement by providing our students hands on training in real life settings.

Thank you to all of the students and staff who attended and worked the event.. great job everyone!

      In The Spotlight

           Gregory

Gregory has attended Mychal's for about four months and has been a great addition to our after school program. His wonderful energy and sunny personality makes our program a bit brighter. When he walks into the building he smiles and greets everyone with such enthusiasm that it has set an excellent example for the rest of the students.

Gregory enjoys contributing to our YouTube channel and has participated in a couple of videos such as our Halloween and Thanksgiving specials. His great smile, voice and personality attract viewer's attention, and alongside his co-anchors it has made these episodes a success. We here at Mychal's want to encourage our students to grow and be able to express themselves in many different ways and we foresee Gregory being our YouTube star!

Mychal's M.I.L.E. Program   MILE logo

The MILE Program (Mychal's Independent Living Experience) runs for 10 months (Sept - June) and is 2 Saturdays per month.  MILE is for students ages 18-25, and teaches life skills necessary to live independent, productive and meaningful lives.
It's a Saturday stop to the laundromat where students learn the hands-on practical skill of doing their laundry independently.

Later that day, they purchase their tickets to board the Metro Rail to Culver City where they will then catch a bus.

Destination...Centinela Feed & Pet Supplies, where students paid a visit in preparation for potential volunteer hours they may soon begin.

Around the Kitchen...

The kitchen seems to be the place where everyone loves to gather. Our Hawthorne After School students were making good use of it, while cooking and even baking cookies for our Family Holiday Party last month.

Friends of Mychal's Art Show Update

Our annual Friends of Mychal's Art Show was a great event! Thanks to all of the guests who came out to support us. We'd like to give a very special thanks to our 2015 Art Show Committee, Mychal's staff & students, participating artists, sponsors, local restaurants, DJ and photographer who helped to make it a success.
Beautiful paintings, photography and sculptures by remarkably talented artists were on display, and along with great food, drinks and music  made it a momentous evening.
