A special thanks to the National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) Manhattan and Hermosa Beach Volunteer group who came to Mychal's Hawthorne to help after school students prepare a pre-thanksgiving meal.       In The Spotlight

         Jerry Muchin

This month our spotlight is on one of Mychal's Board of Directors, Jerry Muchin. I sat down with Jerry to ask him a few questions about being on the Board and what brought him to Mychal's Learning Place.
What led you to Mychal's Learning Place?
My 2nd eldest grand-daughter was a participant in Mychal's after school program at the Culver City location.
Why are you on the board?
It's a small organization that needed individuals to support the population it serves. It was about two years in the making. After I moved out of state, Ed and I kept in touch, built a relationship, and now I'm here.
What makes our mission meaningful to you?
That it brings opportunities for special needs children to be able to be independent, get jobs, and live similar lives as anyone else.
What excites you the most about the organization's work?
That Mychal's is a place of value and support for it's participants. It helps students learn the skills to gain the independence they need.
What do you want to accomplish by serving?
To expand the program, potentially open a new location, and continue to be a model program for other organizations such as we did for an organization in Japan.
What legacy do you want to leave by serving on this board?
It's not about my own legacy, but for the participants of the programs. I'm here because Mychal's is a valuable organization. I'm here to help to provide the necessary opportunities for the future of those with special needs.

Culver City Site

Our after school Culver City students have been busy cooking up ham as well as baking some scrumptious pies...and after all of that delicious filling food, a weekly YMCA work out was in order.

Path to Independence Update

Our Adult Day Program, Path to Independence, is going strong and in demand.  The P2I Program serves adults ages 18 to 30 with opportunities to learn independent living skills as well as receive job training, coaching and placement in volunteer settings through partnerships with local businesses.  However, due to the high level of interest in our P2I program, there is a waiting list.

Moving forward, we are requiring that all who are interested in our program, take a tour of our facility during programs hours prior to being placed on the waiting list. This allows parents/guardians and/or counselors to best decide if our program will be a good match for the prospective student.

Please contact us at 310-297-9333 for more information and/or to schedule a tour.
