      In The Spotlight

  Vincent "Niko" Osorio

Niko has been with Mychal's Learning Place sin
ce October 2011. He currently attends our Path to Independence Program and had
previously participated in our Hawthorne After School Program and MILE program. Niko is doing very well on his path to independence. He's able to grocery shop on his own, use public transportation safely and with minimal support, and is proficient in communicating via email.

As part of his weekly schedule at P2I, Niko participates in a volunteer internship at the Murad Corporate office where he works with Facilities Management to help keep up with the needs of the office. Some of his tasks include sorting mail, creating shipping labels, and maintaining office equipment. In September, Niko was the recipient of an award from Bella Community Services as a ReV-UP Volunteer. Niko received the award based on his ability to coordinate and maintain his own volunteer experience at the Western Museum of Flight. When not attending our program, Niko enjoys watching professional sports like basketball and football.

Empowerment

Each week some of Mychal's after school student's go out local markets to purchase groceries for their weekly cooking class. First and foremost is making a list (deciding what to put on the list and crossing it off when they get the items) then...

 *   Finding items in the store

 *   Looking for the best prices
 *   Navigating a shopping cart
 *   Waiting in line
 *   Store etiquette

Empowerment through choices and support of these learned skills allow individuals with disabilities to achieve optimum quality of life.

Workin' It Out

Mychal's student get their workout, and learn the importance of exercise, good health, and giving back.

 Culver City students get their Friday weight training workout at the YMCA.

Thursday workouts at our Hawthorne site for after school students...thanks  Healthy Giving for leading our weekly class!
