Happy Fall and October!  With cooler temperatures and changing leaves, fall has finally arrived! School is in full swing and everyone is getting into routines and adjusting nicely. 
 
We've got lots of fun things coming up before the end of the year and hope you'll be joining us and making these successful events:

Pumpkin Carving Day

We'll have our annual pumpkin carving day.  Students from both sites will be in Hawthorne to carve their best jack o'lanterns.  We'll have a pumpkin for every student and will gratefully accept donated pumpkins as well.  If you're available to volunteer between 3pm - 6pm, come on over! It could be messy, so be prepared.  Let us know ahead of time that you'll be coming. Thank you!

In The Spotlight 
 

Maya Shulman 

Maya is a new student at Mychal's Culver City site.  She is 12 years old and is in the 7th grade. Some of her favorite things to do at Mychal's are art, cooking, and learning on the iPad. Her hobbies include swimming, spending time with her family, as well as singing and dancing to hip-hop music.

Maya also comes with a very special companion, her service dog, Ned. Ned is a one-year-old Goldendoodle who helps her when she is feeling down.  He comes from 4 Paws for Ability.  The agency's goal is to enrich the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs. The dogs provide increased independence and assistance to families. Everyone at Mychal's is enjoying Maya and Ned's company!

Mychal's Culver City site's students are preparing a delicious lunch of chicken tostadas. They baked the tortilla shells and topped them with fresh veggies.
   


At our Hawthorne site, lasagna alfredo roll-ups and salad are on the lunch menu... our Path to Independence students are getting the job done!




After school students in Hawthorne, know their way around the kitchen...so what's cookin'?.






        


SBCHC Community Outreach
 
Special thanks to South Bay Children's Health Center's Dr. Megha Sata, Maribel Chavez and Avantika Virmani and Dr. Richard Spaulding of Torrance Pediatric Dentistry + Orthodontics who volunteered their time on September 22nd, providing oral check-ups for Mychal's students and gave them some helpful tips on how to take care of their teeth with brushing, flossing & good nutrition for a healthy smile!

   
 

 
SECOH Update
 
During a 2013 trip to Hawaii, Ed made a couple of presentations while visiting organizations that work with our population.  While there, he shared his personal story and information about the programs created at Mychal's Learning Place.  Mychal's has truly been an inspiration for their community.  Please see the letter below from the President of SECOH (Special Education Center of Hawaii).  We are proud that Mychal's Learning Place is having such a positive impact on so many lives!

This group will informally address the questions and concerns that families have about their child's Special Education services and support and more.  All are welcome and you do not have to be a WRC client to attend.  Child care is available - families must RSVP by the day before the group.
