A Year End Letter from the President
Dear Chestnut Friends,

As 2016 comes to a close, here at TACF we are thankful for the many good things that come from our collective efforts to save and restore the American chestnut trees.  I can think of a number of reasons why our mission, and the phenomenal involvement of thousands of citizen scientists, is unique among conservation organizations.  As I continue to travel and meet so many passionate members, partners and donors, many say "restoring the tree" is why they're involved.  But just as many say, "it's the people" whom they cite as one of the driving forces behind giving their time, talent and treasure to the organization.  It is this dedicated family of chestnut enthusiasts, bound by an optimistic goal, who are furthering our important work in orchards and labs across the range of the species and beyond.  TACF is here to support you, and cheer you on as we head into 2017.  Happy holidays to all of you from all of us!

2016 is quickly winding down and we need your help to reach our year end goal of $250,000. TACF is grateful to all of our members and volunteers in 2016 for making the year a great success. Thank you for your support of our long-range mission!

We are working hard to make giving as convenient as possible: call the national office (828-281-0047), give through our Facebook campaign, write a check, or donate online. Turn hope into action. Let's accomplish this bold mission together.
Hit the Ground Running
By Southern Regional Science Coordinator, Ed Schwartzman
TACF is excited to welcome Ed Schwartzman (pictured with Sara Fitzsimmons) as its new Regional Science Coordinator for the Southern Region. Ed began his job in early November and works out of the national office in Asheville. He has already toured a number of orchards, met some key players, and attended the annual meeting in Kentucky. Ed shares that there hasn't been a dull moment and he appreciates the drive and commitment of everyone involved with TACF. Continue reading to learn more about Ed and his call to action with TACF.
Give Yourself a Tax Break Before the Year Runs Out!
You have a unique opportunity to provide critical support for TACF's mission by giving an IRA charitable rollover gift. Doing so is a unique way to help us bring back the American chestnut. The rollover allows individuals 70 ½ or older to donate up to $100,000 tax-free from their IRA to The American Chestnut Foundation. You pay no income tax on the gift, and it can satisfy all or part of the required minimum distribution for the year. Download our rollover form here or contact Lisa Thomson or Vic Hutchinson at (828) 281-0047.

Staff Article: Random Act of Kindness
by Samantha Bowers
This fall, Grants Manager Samantha Bowers participated in a contest between six non-profit organizations to receive funding through the Awesome Asheville Foundation. Samantha's pitch was a joint effort of The American Chestnut Foundation and the NC Arboretum to get kids outside via a program called  EcoEXPLORE. Samantha did not win the contest, BUT she was a winner because her pitch was funded by one of the attendees. TACF received a $1,000 grant in collaboration with the NC Arboretum to fund a fantastic educational initiative. Learn more about the EcoEXPLORE program.
Collaborating to Save an American Icon
It takes a lot of hands, energy, and perseverance to plant an orchard. On Saturday, December 3, a crew of 25 volunteers planted 35 fruit trees and numerous shrubs at Vance Elementary School's new Community Orchard in West Asheville. Six of those trees were American restoration chestnuts, donated by TACF. The planting could only become a reality through a collaborative effort from The Roots Foundation, Vance Elementary, and TACF. Keep reading to see the great pictures from this wonderful project.
