Staff Article: TACF Improves Pollinator Habitat through Reclaimed Mine Land Reforestation

For more than a decade, The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) has been working to restore and improve pollinator habitats in conjunction with multiple partners working with the US Department of Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. In 2015, TACF planted more than 375,000 seedlings on 625 acres of mined lands, with native trees, shrubs, and others staples for honey bees and native pollinators.

 

Appalachian Trail MEGA-Transect Chestnut Project Training Opportunities

On June 30th, Mid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator Matthew Brinckman will present a training webinar for the Appalachian Trail MEGA-Transect Chestnut Project through the Virginia Masters Naturalists. The success of this important project depends upon well-informed, volunteer citizen scientists, and this webinar is a great opportunity to join the MEGA-Transect Chestnut team!

Recognize a friend or loved one for only $10.00 by having TACF plant a Restoration Chestnut 1.0 in that person's name. It's a symbollic gesture and it's quite easy too. FOR SALE: Reclaimed American Chestnut Timber

A longtime TACF member, Robert (Buzz) Holland is selling 1500 broad feet of flat, straight American chestnut lumber to any TACF member with an interest. The lumber has no worm holes and was cut from live American chestnut logs. "Must purchase all or none; flat price of $18/per board foot; buyer must pick up lumber from Wisconsin facility." Nominate an American Chestnut for the 2015 Great American Tree

In partnership with the USDA and the U.S. Forest Service, The American Grove is hosting the first annual Great American Tree competition. The deadline for nominations is Tuesday, June 30, 2015. An elite panel of urban foresters will then vote and announce the winner on September 15, 2015. Help the American chestnut claim this title by submitting your nomination today!
