This spring was a busy season for TACF as we continued our efforts to include chestnuts as part of reforestation efforts on mined lands. In 2013, with help from our partners, the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative (ARRI) and Green Forests Work (GFW), volunteer planting events were held on reclaimed mines in Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. In his spare time over the last year, Jon Taylor of the Carolinas Chapter of TACF trekked 262 miles of the Appalachian Trail (AT), collecting data on American chestnut trees as part of the AT MEGA-Transect Chestnut Project. Kirby Carmack and Nicole Rodriguez, students of Poolesville High School Class of 2013, wrote a children 's book about the American chestnut tree as part of their senior project for the Global Ecology Science Program. They hope to inform young readers on the importance of the environment, specifically the restoration of the American chestnut. Read their book and our interview with the authors!
