Garden Club of America Awards Prestigious Medal of Honor to TACF  

On May 2nd TACF's President & CEO Bryan Burhans was presented with a Medal of Honor from the Garden Club of America (GCA) for TACF's outstanding service to horticulture. Past winners of GCA metals have included Rachel Carson, the Rockefeller Family, Dr. E. O. Wilson, and Dr. Norman Borlaug (a founder of TACF). Find out the details of this distinguished award.
Grafting Gives Legs to Trees at Meadowview Research Farms

To finish converting the Meadowview Research Farm's Wagner Farm to a seed orchard, we need to remove a few more of the older trees growing there. We are "moving" the trees to the Price Farm by grafting their buds onto sprouts (epicotyls) of germinated Chinese chestnut seeds. Find out how it's done.

American chesnut planting 5-9-13
Have you ever seen a time-lapse video of a group putting in an American chestnut orchard? Dr. William Powell of SUNY-ESF took this video of 8 volunteers planting about 580 transgenic American chestnut trees at ESF's LaFayette Road Experiment station. This shows that it really does take a "village" to plant an orchard! 
The Golden Chinquapin of California

There is another chinquapin our there, the golden or giant chinquapin, Chrysolepis chrysophylla. This tree is a member of the Fagaceae (beech) family, but is very different from Castanea species such as Ozark and Allegheny chinquapin. Read more!

Get started with Regional Science Coordinator Tom Saielli's advice: "The most important step is choosing a good site. It's like the old real estate slogan, location, location, location."
