WORM SANDWICHES

Got kids?  Having a Halloween party?  Forget time consuming cookies that look like fingers and other elaborate dishes - this one will have you out of the kitchen in 10 minutes:

INGREDIENTS

*  1 package hot dogs
*  1 cup secret sauce of your choice  (ketchup, bbq sauce, etc.)
*  buns

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Slice hot dogs lengthwise into "worm-size" slivers.
2. Boil hot dog slivers until they curl up and look like worms.
3. Drain worms and mix with sauce.
4. Serve.

As you might guess, this recipe required extensive research and testing (sarcasm).  Here is another easy one.

FOODIE'S CORNER

ZOMBIES
Pro or Con?

Let's talk brains.  OK, since this is supposed to be a food tidbit, let's talk BEEF brains.

Did you know that Americans have eaten beef brains for at least 100 years? They have lots of protein as well as a type of Omega-3 fatty acid (good fat).  Plus, they contain copper, selenium, and several B vitamins.

On the other hand, beef brains are loaded with cholesterol, and, on a really bad day may contain bovine spongiform encephalitis - "mad cow disease."

So before you dig in you have to ask yourself, are you feeling lucky?

Garden Tips

ATTRACTING BATS

We need bats.  They eat tons of annoying insects such as mosquitos and also bugs that destroy crops.  Plus,where would the cult horror movie industry be today were it not for bats?

But how to attract them?  Sure, putting up a few bat houses would help.  You can also...

1.Install a pond. Don't drain that wetland.  Don't cut down that forest.  Native habitats are crucial for bat survival.

2.  Leave that dead tree standing!  They may be ugly, but hollowed out old trees make excellent bat roosts.

3.  Leave bats alone!  If they are living in places where they don't generally pose a health threat, such as barns or other unoccupied buildings, let them be!

TURKEY REMINDER

Catskill Harvest is pleased to once again be working with
Campanelli's Poultry Farm
located in Kenoza Lake to bring you the freshest locally raised heritage breed turkeys for your Thanksgiving meal.

As in years past, we are offering 4 sizes of birds to choose from. Because Campanelli's is a small family run farm, the supply of their tender birds is limited.  To be certain that your feast features a Campanelli heritage turkey - please place your order with us as soon as you can. If you delay doing so - you may be the turkey instead.
