Radish Crostini

Right now farmer's markets are overflowing with spring's cool season crops.  One of our favorites is the simple radish - sweet & peppery, they contain vitamin C, fiber, and cancer fighting compounds.

For a great appetizer or snack, try radish crostini with pesto.  Simply top a Catskill Harvest crostini with a dollop of pesto, then a few slices of radish (some people also like a sprinkle of salt.)  Delicious!

ORGANIC OR NOT?

June is one of our favorite months - it is when local produce starts to become available again in abundance.  Many of us are concerned about pesticides in our produce and try to buy organic when possible.  Unfortunately, organic produce often comes with a premium price tag.  If you are on a budget, consider using the Environmental Working Group's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce.  It will tell you which produce carries the greatest risk of pesticide residue - try to purchase those organic when you can.

SLUG CONTROL

They're b-a-a-a-c-k...
These mollusks (sometimes referred to as "snails without shells") have returned to wreak havoc for another gardening season.

Our favorite remedy: beer.  Just pour a little into a few low containers (like pie tins) and by morning you will have captured more slugs than you know what to do with.
