Strike Camp!
Last week Vancouver ma'aplim ran a full scale, by donation, day camp at Temple Sholom during the BC Teacher's Strike. The creation of the day camp stemmed from recognizing the difficult position the government had put parents in, while standing in solidarity with the teachers. Ma'aplim organized themselves quite efficiently, and with a passion to take action, they opened the day camp within a few days. The day camp was beyond successful and had roughly 25 chanichim (campers) attending. When the camp was over, a long time member of the Camp Miriam community remarked that he admires the ma'apilim's initiative and ruach. "The Camp showed that with cooperation and teamwork in the Jewish community, we are able to create wonderful things for the benefit of the whole community."

Reunion 2014!
On Sunday, September 21st, we had our annual Camp Miriam Reunion! We had a wonderful turnout of 70 chanichim (campers) who couldn't get enough of machaneh (camp) this summer. The Reunion encompassed kvutzah time, arts and crafts, a tiyul relay race, and a gaga tournament! The reunion closed with mifkad erev and rad hayom, just to make everyone a little more camp-sick!

First Israel, Now Shabbat Dinner.. What Next?!
Last Friday, September 19th, the Post-Mbiers went to a Shabbat dinner ran by their Ken Madrichim Talia, Raphy and Mookel. Their night started with a walk to the "Point" (a nice, nearby park close to the Bayit), with the classic story from the "Rosh" (Talia), and came back to the Bayit to eat Shabbat dinner with all of their beloved friends. What a blast!

Musings of the Registrar
Summer 2014 was a tremendous summer with record registration in second session. A total of 291 chanichim, including 16 Madatz, welcomed Shabbat at the Point, did Rikud in the migrash, had Asepha at Twin Beaches, discussed what percentage of their kupa to give to Tzedakkah, sang Mi Yatzileinu before each meal, and, in general, carried on the Miriam traditions we all hold near and dear to our hearts.
The Tzevet was stellar - they each brought their strengths and ideas to the summer and put together a fun, creative program. Over the last few years much thought has been given to increasing the number of positions at camp for Habo Chaverim to fill. This summer saw a Habo Chatzran who helped the caretaker, a Habo tiyul specialist, a Habo medic who worked with the RN, and two experienced madrichot who worked with chanichim with special needs or mental health issues. The later positions, besides helping a chanich have a positive experience at machaneh, gives much needed daily support to the madrichim.
In addition to these positions, the Mitbach (kitchen) staff was Habo, or friends of Habo chaverim. Their main responsibility was to the kitchen, and their work schedule was developed so that each of them could run a Chug or Avodah, be part of a planning committee, and take part in camp in other ways. The food was healthy and yummy, the budget was balanced, and they proved that with strong leadership in the mitbach it is possible to have a kitchen staff which is an integral part of the running of machaneh. Kol Hakavod!

Welcome New Bayit Members!
Say goodbye to 59 and hello to 61 (plus 1/5 62). The Madrichim living in the Bayit the previous few years have sadly moved out of the beloved house on Prince Edward and King Edward, but have opened up their space to younger Madrichim living in the city. Isaac Kool, Madison Slobin, Talia Behrmann, Raphy Tishler and Lior Bar-El are the residents now. These 5 amazing individuals will be the ones spearheading the Vancouver Ken. They have already done an amazing job by putting together an empowering seminar, called "Ken Construction", for the Madrichim and post-Madatzim living in Vancouver. During that weekend the Maapilim talked about what they wanted for the Ken this upcoming year and already started planning the events for kids. "It was really informative and just an overall great time!" says Anja Hedji. Congrats new Bayit residents and get excited everyone for an amazing year for the ken!

Only Peace Can Bring Peace
The "Only Peace Can Bring Peace" slogan was displayed by Habonim Dror camps across North America this summer, including Galil in Pennsylvania, Moshavah in Maryland, and Gilboa in California. Camp Miriam strives to educate about Israel in a diverse and holistic manner so that chanichim may become strong advocates for a just and lasting peace in the Jewish homeland. The 2nd Session Shomrim decided to make this picture their kvutzah project this summer in order to show solidarity with our sister camps, as well as promote peace, not only as an end, but a means.

Workshop Corner
Workshop 64 has officially begun! Since September 2nd, 8 Miriam Madrichim have begun a journey in Israel with their international kvutza. The first few days was orientation, and now they are officially on the first 3 month part of the program, Boneh, which means to build, which is held a little north of the town Afula on Kibbutz Ein-Dor. On Boneh they've been doing very similar things to Workshoppers in the past such as learning Hebrew, learning about the Movement's history as well as, but not limited to, bonding with members of the Kibbutz. "It's been such an amazing experience so far!" says fellow Miriamnik, Jack Snyder. The Madrichim in Vancouver, Victoria and all other places wish the Workshoppers an invigorating and meaningful next 9 months.
