News from the Ken
 April 2014
Greetings!

Spring has arrived at last and Pesach is right around the corner! March was a eventful month for the Vancouver Ken. Engaging with a variety of different activities we: celebrated Purim in our best costumes, had a high-tea party at the bayit, flew to California for West Coast seminar with Camp Gilboa, we attending an MVA launching event promoting social change and made awesomely-cool tie-dye T-shirts. With April's bloom, we can't wait to be at machaneh and dip our toes in Gabriola's blue ocean waters.

Thank you so much for your support and we hope you enjoy this month's newsletter!

High Tea at the Bayit
This month each bonim chanich/a recieved a letter of invitation requesting their presence at the bayit for High Tea at noon on March 30th. Arriving in their semi-finest clothing, they enjoyed peach tea, finger sandwiches and delicious cookies. They each 'checked-in' about how they were doing and caught Afterwards, they had a peula discussing what they choose to put at the center of their relationships and different social circles. A good time was had by all!
West Coast, the Best Coast!
During March, 22 Chanichim from Miriam went to Los Angeles for our annual West Coast Seminar. Every year the seminar is alternatively hosted in either Vancouver or L.A. There, they met many other chanichim from North America and formed relationships along the West Coast of Habonim North America. They visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, danced rikkud on Friday night and had interesting discussions in peulot.

Purim Party
What do costumes, Oznei Haman (Hamantashan), arts and crafts, and the Nitzanim, Amelim, Sayarim and Chotrim have in common? They were all at an awesome purim party at the bayit! Chanichim came dressed to impress in their purim best. Costumes ranged from party animals, to animal nerds. We followed Esther, Vashti, Achavsherosh, Mordechai and Haman through the story of Purim, stopping to make Oznei Haman (Hamantashan), Graggers, and mishloach Manot. Everyone had a great time playing games and learning about purim.
Tie-Dye Wonderland
The nitzanim and amelim enjoyed an afternoon of tie-dyeing and games! The event started with a few classic games like bang. Followed by a lesson in tie dying and then finally the chance for everyone to design their favourite white clothes. The event ended with another great game, ninja. Everyone had an awesome time at another successful ken event! Thanks to everyone who attended the event :)
Habonim Metro-Vancouver Alliance
On March 19th twenty Ma'apilim, and Chanichim attended the founding assembly of the Metro Vancouver Alliance. Which is a broad based coalition of organizations from Faith, Labour and Community groups. Habonim Dror was there representing the Jewish community in Vancouver, to stand up for communities striving towards social justice. There were over 600 people in attendance at the assembly including  various local and provincial politicians, and a large diversity of organizations such as; Uniform 111, Vancouver and District Labour Council, Down Town East Side Catholic Parishes, Eco-Justice unit of the Anglican Diocese, Aboriginal Life In Vancouver Enhancement (ALIVE) Society, and Reach Community Health Centre, just to name a few. In the coming months Habonim Dror will be working with the Metro Vancouver Alliance to tackle key issues affecting our community, and launching campaigns to fight; The un-affordability of housing, Poverty, Transit, and social isolation.
Solar Kenergy
This month, Leah Levi and Yossi (our Shaliach) visited Camp Miriam's Portland Ken. Their dinner was a huge success and saw lots of chanichim and their families as well as prospective chanichim.

Last weekend, they had (drum roll please) the first ever Seattle-Portland ken sleepover! They hosted between 20 and 30 chanichim from Portland and Seattle (WOW!). The Seattle chaverim drove down on Friday for a weekend full of fun things like a peulot about friendships and distance, watching the movie Frozen and discussing its femenist/anti-femenist messages. They also got some of Portland famous Voodoo Doughnuts, and even visited the Portland Zoo! For some American solidarity they all got beanies that say "Not A Touque." A good time was had by all!

Keep it up Solar Kenergy!
