Morriah is Returning as Rosh for Summer 2014!
The Personnel committee of Camp Miriam is thrilled to announce that hot on the heels of one of the most successful summers in Machaneh history, Morriah Kaplan will be returning as Rosh for Kayitz (summer) 2014.
Morriah has attended Miriam since 2006, when she joined her kvutsa for Bonim. Since then, she has been on MBI and Workshop, and has become an essential member of her kvutsa and the ma'apilim community. Morriah worked three summers as a madricha, was merkezet techni 2012 and of course, Rosh 2013.
During the year, Morriah is a student of English Literature and Urban Studies at the Washington University in St. Louis. This year Morriah has started tutoring middle-schoolers in Math and continues to be very involved in the local chapter of the Israel advocacy group, JStreet U.
Morriah brings to the tafkid a ton of energy, incredible organizational skills, and a thoughtfulness in decision-making. She is excited to build on her experience from last summer and to carry through many of the projects, initiatives and conversations that she and her mazkirut started. We are confident that with Morriah's leadership, Kayitz 2014 will be another summer to remember.

Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah!
Thank for everyone who came to our annual Hanukkah Party! This year, we celebrated at the Hillcrest Community Center: we played dreidel with chocolate gelt, watched a Hanukkah play acted out by our madrichim, made medorah's out of crafty material, hung out with our camp friends and ate lots of yummy suvganiot!

Bonim go to Granville Island!
This month, the Bonim met up at the bayit and went on an adventure to Granville Island! We explored the market and discovered incredible local artwork! After enjoying fresh out-of-the-oven bagels, we talked about our week and caught up on how everyone was doing. Embracing the crisp-cold November air they fed a crowd of pigeons and danced to a live band. Much fun was had!

Shomrim and Tzofim Love Surprises!!
The ShoTzo ken rocked out this month to a SURPRISE!-themed event! After acquainting ourselves, we played a distant cousin of Jeopardy with a lot more craziness, arbitrary logic, and candy, then watched an interesting documentary on Modern Israel. Shout out to everyone who came and had a great time!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
The Sayarim and Chotrim had an awesome green-ken event this month! They had a city-related and sustainability themed peula and a candy oriented scavenger hunt! And ended with a playing an extreme version of do you know your clothes (a game where each person in the circle must guess all the details about their shirt determined by the tag; a fun way to understand where our "stuff" comes from and the labour that went into it!).

Hey AmeilNitz, What Do You Call a Chocolate Date Ball in a Storm?
It looked like a storm went through the 61 bayit because of all the couch rearrangements and flour all over the kitchen. However, it was actually the Nitzanim and Amelim who built forts, made pita and chocolate date balls, as well as performed skits to learn about Israeli culture. While eating their delicious food and playing fun games they enjoyed just the mere pleasure of seeing their each other during the midst of a busy school year!

Did You Know There's a Ken in Portland?!
The Portland Ken usually has one event per month for all kvutzot (all ages) including prospective chanichim; their ken reaches out all the way from Eugene! Portland Ken's official name is Solar Kenergy.
As they don't have any madrichim in their ken, Joanna Friedman (the oldest member and a post-madatz), Marina Levy and Eli Henderson primarily run the ken.
In the past they've done things like a scavenger hunts, potlucks, pizza parties, ice skating and usually have about 15 people at each ken event that are all different ages. This is the most active Solar Kenergy has ever been, and they're really pumped to have such an active and good sized ken!
This month Solar Kenergy went ice-skating! And next month their ken event will be at the Portland Zoo for "Zoo Lights" (glowing led lights are set up around the zoo during the holiday season)
Kol Hakavod!

We Like Hanukkah Parties Too!
This month, as Hanukkah arrived in super early, Vancouver Ma'apilim gathered at the 61 Bayit to light the candles and enjoy some yummy foods. Yossi (the shaliach) treated us to home-made suvganiot!
