Central Shaliach Visits Vancouver Ken

Julian Resnick, Habonim Dror Central Shaliach in North America, visited the Vancouver Ken last month. During his visit Julian met with the Maapilim at UBC for a sushi lunch which he is still talking about. it was an interesting conversation about current issues facing the movement and the Maapilim today. Julian also met with Mark Gurvis, the Chief Executive Officer of The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver. He thanked Mark and the Jewish Federation for their continuous support of Camp Miriam and said Vancouver Federation is committed to a model of working with the camps that he hoped Federations in other centers would follow. Julian is coming to the end of his 3-year Shlichut in North America and this summer will become Mazkir (director) of World Habonim Dror in Tel Aviv. He'll be farther away, but still part of the Habonim Dror world.

We Celebrated Tu B'shvat in a Multi-Generational Gathering

On January 27th kids of all ages, parents, current madrachim (counsellors) and alumni from many generations gathered at the Peretz Centre in Vancouver for our 2nd annual Camp Miriam Havdallah. We played ice breakers, shared stories about camp from different eras and, of course, did a classic Camp Miriam Havdallah led by madrichim. Tu B'shvat was marked by the making of "seed balls" which will hopefully grow this spring and cheer up a previously empty space. We also dined on different dried fruits which are native to Israel. The event was a huge success with over one hundred people in attendance, some coming all the way from Seattle. We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Fun in the Snow at Tubishvat

On February 3rd, Ken Miriam had their annual Snow tubishvat event. Around 40 kids from every kvutza gathered at the JCC for the bus ride up to Cypress mountain. On the mountain, everybody had a great time celebrating Tu Bishvat in the great outdoors, tubing down the hill with all of their machaneh friends. Afterwards, we warmed up and had dinner and hot chocolate.

Shomrim Peula

The Chefs of Shomrim faced off in an epic battle to create the most delicious dishes using materials provided by the judges (madrichim). After an hour of intense cooking the chanichim were able to pull off a three course meal, incorporating some strange ingredients but winning over the judges who gave them very high scores based off of their creativity, presentation and taste! All around, good fun was had and a big thanks to the Robens-Paradise for hosting the ken event!

Educating about Yitzhak Rabin Legacy
During the month of November, Maapilim went to different parts of the Jewish Community (e.g. JCC, Vancouver Talmud Torah, RJDS) and informed Jewish youth about the importance of Yitzchak Rabin (the 5th Prime Minister of Israel), his life and assassination. Maapilim held an informal museum tutorial and discussed Rabin role in leading Israel through a peace process and its significance today.

Tzofim Gathered Over a Machaneh-Style Shabbat Dinner

On Febuary 15, the Tzofim came together for a beautiful shabbat dinner with their kvuztah and madrichim. It was an incredibly relaxing reunion, complete with lighting shabbat candles, eating warm challah, and a surprise visitor from Seattle who came up to the great white north to spend time with his kvutzah. Good times were had by all, we can't wait for the next one!
