  Facilitating global impact

Greetings!

How does it feel to overcome barriers to seize an opportunity? Sometimes, the results blow us away!

Snatch It!

by Pat Ashcraft

I almost let opportunity pass me by. It would have been the reasonable thing to do. After all, I had been suffering severe back pain for about six months that even prevented me from sleeping at night. Why would I travel from eastern Pennsylvania to Ohio for a women's conference?

I'm glad I went. There I met some amazing women as we discussed how to maturely deal with conflicts in ministry in a way that brings harmony and blessing to the women's ministry and to the church in general. More importantly, it confirmed that opportunity was knocking.

Recently retired as Director of Development for a Christian non-profit, I was looking for a volunteer position for an organization to use my abilities. Women of Grace USA was looking for someone to do exactly what I love to do.  (read more)
Making it Personal with Pat Ashcraft

April showers bring May flowers. Well, April has been a little dry in our area. According to the weather man, we are down about two inches of rain for the year. Now, that isn't drought conditions by any means. And even with the low rainfall, we will have many pretty flowers. But the farmers would like to have that rain. They like it when the heavens open up and pour out "liquid blessings" that make the crops grow.

Women of Grace USA needs the "heavens to open up" with giving that will pour blessings on this ministry. We aren't in a drought, but we certainly need more "rain" to keep our ministry moving forward. We want to support more women's ministries, train more women for leadership in their churches and help women go deeper into God's Word. Will you consider being that person who will bless Women of Grace with a monthly or quarterly donation?

What's Happening to Me?

from Jennifer Fretz

This article has taken many turns over the past couple of weeks, but in the end I decided to just be honest and vulnerable with you, sisters. The past few months have been very difficult for me. I went through the usual "winter funk" that maybe some of you experienced, but come March I wasn't quite able to snap out of it. I was going through some kind of depression and couldn't put my finger on why. I have been through periods in my life when anxiety stepped in, but those times were usually around major life changes happening, I knew what to pin the anxiety on, and I was able to get through it pretty quickly. This season of my life has been different and has left me wondering what is going on with me to create this dark time.

In talking to my pastor I can list many things that can contribute to depression-lack of sleep (no, it's not that), lack of routine (no, definitely not that), nutrition (hmm, I don't think so, but I have had significant weight loss in the last six months.), sin (well...uh...yes, I do sin), filling one's head with unwholesome things (maybe-I do listen to a lot of secular music), and I suppose more could be added to this list. I'm sure there is something I could tweak in each of those areas, but is it really severe enough to cause depression? Why do I cry when people tell me how good I look with my weight loss? Why do I not look forward to anything fun that my family has planned? Why do I get so annoyed with my kids lately, and miss the times before kids when life was easier? (Yes, sadly, I really do go there in my mind.) continue reading

Taught to Pray by a Homeless Woman

I have often passed our street corner lately with an uncomfortable feeling. We have new residents in town-and not ones that will contribute to the city in revenue. In fact, they cost the city, as the police have to deal with vagrancy and other infractions. Several churches have set up places to feed them. They are our homeless.

I never used to call them "our" homeless. I didn't want to feel any responsibility toward "these" people. One young stocky woman, about 21, waves happily to each car that passes, hoping some will stop and contribute. It makes my blood boil that a young, healthy person has nothing better to do than beg for a living. But then, as always, my emotions turn into guilt as I wonder, "What would Jesus do for this woman?"

Another woman has driven me to think about the conflict within me. She came into the church with her cart full, things dropping out of it. She wore a scarf, covering her dirty blond hair. Her clothes were soiled and you could smell where she had been. Everyone did what he or she could at fellowship time. Some gave her extra food, a few sat at her table, some shoved some money in her hand. (I frowned at that! What if she just buys drugs?)

It dawns on me that the woman is teaching me something.  I am moving from the known, what I thought I understood about compassion and mercy, to the unknown as I ask myself, "What would Jesus do for this woman?  What is He able to do in me if I surrender this to Him?  And then, what is He able to do in the homeless woman if I am Jesus' hands and feet?"

Have you struggled with these inner conflicts? Take them to Jesus and let Him show you how to pray-and respond.

Review by Erin Shuler

Do you ever feel like God is calling you to do something, but you are too afraid to place everything in your life on hold and follow the call?
