Leadership discoveries

By Janet Minnix

I never dreamed when I agreed to a three-year term as president of WMC (now Women of Grace USA) that my term would end up lasting 17 years. While the world has changed much, some principles I have learned are still very relevant. I share them with the hope they will help and inspire others with leadership responsibilities:

  • Your role is a calling from God. When I first became president, selecting leaders was done by asking women to allow their names to be placed on the ballot for election to office. However it was becoming harder to find women willing to serve, so the attitude was often, "I'll do it if no one else will." In fact, that was somewhat my own attitude until one day God showed me that what I was doing was more than a job that no one else would do - it was a ministry to which He had called me. Suddenly I felt free: free to be who He called me to be, free to stop worrying about finding a successor, free to follow His leading.
  • Be yourself. Initially I did everything in the same way as my predecessor. But I began to see that while we had similar gifts, my personality and style of leadership were different. I began to "feel comfortable in my own skin" and accepted the fact that God had given me the experiences and abilities I needed for the task at that time. You are not your predecessor, nor should you try to copy her. Be yourself, because God has uniquely prepared you for this job at this time.    (continue)

Diamond Jubilee

This year Women of Grace USA celebrates 75 years of ministry-and YOU are invited to the party! Join us for a festive diamond-themed party at Fellowshift Conference in Washington, D.C. on Friday, July 18th at 2:30 PM as we celebrate all that the Lord has done through women of grace like you! We'll remember highlights of the past and share about the exciting direction that Women of Grace USA is headed and how you can help! There will be a brief corporation meeting as well as fun and meaningful activities for a chance to get acquainted with other women in the Fellowship while sharing what God is doing among us! And don't forget to grab your copy of the latest Women's Spectrum magazine! Childcare will be available for this session.

We would also encourage you to attend a workshop that morning at 11:15 on Daring to Hope, a soon-to-be-released study of the book of Jeremiah by Melissa Spoelstra, one of our Women's Spectrum editors.

Diamond Jubilee Sponsor

Would you like to help sponsor the diamond jubilee? Our 75th anniversary celebration at FellowShift Conference will be extraordinarily special. In addition, we're preparing a video about WGUSA to be shown to the entire conference. But these things mean extra expense. If you would like to contribute toward the celebration, click here. And thanks for being a part of the excitement.
PrayerWatch Partnership - Discovering God's Answers

from Sharon MacMillan

Joni Eareckson Tada delivered a specialized wheel chair to a family in Peru with her Wheels for the World team. Everyone was surprised how well the chair suited the young woman who suffered from cerebral palsy and epilepsy since birth. Joni presented the mom with a Bible and the mom broke out in sobs. Thinking the woman was thanking her for the Bible, Joni was surprised when the mom explained through an interpreter, "Now I can wheel my daughter to church. I don't have to carry her anymore! I prayed for twenty years that God would provide a wheel chair." - taken from Joni Eareckson Tada's book, A Lifetime of Wisdom.

Is twenty years too long to watch and wait for God to orchestrate His perfect answer? Let us stand with you in your "impossible situations." Send your prayer burdens to Sharon MacMillan at gleskafam@mac.com

Discovering Freedom: What About Body Image?

by Jen Fretz

It's bathing suit weather! Are you ready? Just kidding. This article is actually not about bathing suit weather, although it does tie in. Let's talk about....BODY IMAGE! I know, I know, ugh!

I have my fair share of personal struggles with this topic. I've always been very confident in most areas of my life. I've never struggled with self-worth in my relationships, I've always been pretty confident with my natural talents, and I feel like I'm valued in other roles that I play.  But my personal body image needs some major work and more so now that I have a daughter.

My issue has always been my weight. I've struggled with it since I was a young child and was made fun of more than once. Eventually, in high school, my weight evened out and then the acne started in! Then came the unwanted body and facial hair. (Come on gals, I know you can relate!) I've spent the last half of my life feeling like a blemished and hairy Jabba the Hutt! (Star Wars reference-in case you didn't know. Google it for a comical illustration!) I joke!

I must share that my husband has always treated me like a goddess. Even if I was Jabba's twin I'm confident that he would continue to compliment me the way he does. So what is my problem? I know, in my head, that I'm fearfully and wonderfully made.  Why can't I know that in my heart as well? I know I'm not alone. I know that most women struggle with body image-weight, skin, hair, height, features...this list goes on and on, doesn't it?

I've been able to deal with this on my own through the years, but now that I have a daughter my "dealing with it" has become much more challenging. (continue)
