You Have to Jump!
|

By Viki Rife
The other day when I went to visit my 4-year-old grandson, he led me straight into his room and ran to the bed. "Come on, Grandma," he said. "This is an island!"
As I sat on the edge of the bed, he bounced several times, then leaped off energetically, hitting the floor with a deafening thud. "Jump in the water, Grandma!" he urged. Out of consideration for my joints, I slid off the bed and onto the floor. He watched me gravely for a moment, then announced, "I have bad news for you, Grandma. You're still on the surface. You have to jump to go deep." more

Family Devotions
by Jennifer Fretz
Family devotions have been somewhat of an experiment in our house the last couple of years. Our oldest is only 5, so when we started getting serious about having devotions with her each day she was only about 3 years old. We read through her toddler Bible pretty quickly and moved on to a different one for a change of scenery. We have a few other versions of the Bible for young kids and we also have many individual Bible story books and a few children's devotional books. I'm guessing your bookshelves look similar!
After seeing that these simple versions of Bible stories weren't quite captivating our daughter, we decided to start reading the Bible to her! We are still currently doing this but it has become "boring" to her. And then there is the whole praying thing. We always talk about specific things we can be praying for/about each day, but often times she does not want to pray. Sometimes I'm at a total loss of what to do. Do we go back to the kid's stories because they are shorter and easier to understand? Do we continue to read the Bible because we believe that our kids should be hearing and learning from the Word no matter what age? Do we insist that they pray even though they whine and tell us they don't feel like it? And how concerned should I be that our devotional time in the evenings is NOT looked forward to? read

Inconvenient prayer
A heaven-bound trekker who becomes experienced like the Apostle Peter will learn to endure hardship, praying when it isn't comfortable or convenient. Both James and Peter tell us that the process to becoming mature involves enduring diverse and grievous trials. Peter says your faith is worth more than refined gold. So keep on steadfastly interceding, knowing God has heard and your faith is becoming more precious with each supplication.

 | Daughters of the King Banquet |
| |

|
About 150 leaders, girls and visitors signed up for the special event celebrating the 100th birthday of SMM. Speakers were Nicole Miller and Vonetta Carter; worship was led by Jen Lepore. A celebration video introduced the new name for SMM: Sisters Mentoring with a Mission. Girls were challenged, as daughters of the King, to be ambassadors in all their environments. One leader commented afterwards: "That was so special--I felt cared for." Another leader shared that her group of girls chose to go back to the dorm and just have some girl time instead of hanging out with the boys. "They realized how important it is to encourage one another," she commented.

The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath
by Mark Buchanan

|
Review by Christy Carmean
I think most of us would agree that we feel perpetually busy, tired, and lacking energy. The sad part is that Christians fill our lives as full as the unbelieving world.
God has set up a way for us to experience rest in the midst of our packed schedules, rushed hours, and long to-do lists. Many of us know the concept of sabbath rest, but few of us actually put it into practice. Mark Buchanan, in his book The Rest of God, offers insight into why we desperately need rest, some direction in how to practice sabbath rest, and personal stories from his own journey toward rest.
Mark Buchanan has also written Your God is Too Safe, Things Unseen, and The Holy Wild. After pastoring a church for over 17 years, Mark recently began a new phase of life teaching pastoral ministry.
How do you know if you are getting enough rest? read more
