When Good Isn't Enough

In the 80's, my life looked like some of yours probably do....loving Jesus, married, two little kids, attending a great church, active in ladies' Bible studies and trying to be a "good Christian woman." I was asked to lead a class for young moms in our church while our kids were in preschool there. Now of course we wouldn't turn anyone away but we really liked having our little group. A few things that were really important to us were:
(1) always share personal prayer requests about our lives, our husbands, our kids, our homes, our physical issues (you get it, right?)
(2) class to be exactly one (1) hour
(3) always have a snack sign-up sheet for the upcoming week
(4) STAY ON SCHEDULE.
None of us ever really knew where Sue came from. She didn't attend our church and her kids weren't in our preschool. Sue was a mom about my age with two little boys the ages of mine. She came faithfully every week to the class. She never missed. And every week I could count on her coming up after class and just "hanging around" where I was sitting while I tried to gather up my things to get out of class. It never failed. I would be getting everything crammed in a bag so I could go get my children from their preschool classes so we could hurry to meet our friends for our weekly MacDonald's play/lunch. But no, Sue would just stand there asking me questions about the most random things ever. I really didn't have time for that, but I didn't want to be rude. Inviting her to join me for lunch never crossed my mind-she wasn't part of our lunch playgroup. More

Fixed heart
by Jennifer Fretz
I was having a total pity party for myself earlier this week! Actually, if I am being honest, I would have to say it's been a pretty constant thing for at least two or three weeks. All these little things coming from different aspects of my life kept piling on to this big ball of "woe is me," and before I knew it my life was absolutely terrible (in my mind, that is). My kids won't stop fighting, they won't stop disobeying, they are driving me crazy, there is never enough money, there will never be enough money, we will never be able to buy a second car, we will never be able to move out of this tiny house, I'll never be able to lose weight, my business will never pick up...I'm ashamed to say the list kept going. One of the participants in the Women's Leadership Studies class in Ashland, Ohio, found out about the class when she was researching online. Her (non-Brethren) church had entrusted her with starting a women's ministry, and she wasn't sure where to start. She posted on our wall: "Thank you for sponsoring the Biblical Foundations of Leadership on April 19-20. It was a huge blessing to study and grow in spirit with so many strong Christian women. God is using each one of them in amazing ways to further his kingdom. All glory to God!" We say "Amen!" to that.
The next class, Spiritual Formation, is June 21-22, Winona Lake, IN

...when you can't
If Linda Day was disappointed that she couldn't go on her church's mission trip to Africa because of her health, she didn't complain. Instead, the former Women of Grace president at the Ashland Grace Brethren Church asked if there was some other way she could help. Her enthusiasm for sewing was the answer. more

One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer

Review by Christy Carmean
Have you ever read a book that caused you to say, "Ouch!"? Not because you got a paper cut while turning one of the pages or because the cost of the book was so exorbitant, but because you wondered how God could arrange this particular book to be in your hands on this particular day in the midst of this particular set of circumstances that you were dealing with. One in a Million by Priscilla Shirer was that kind of book for me. I had to put it down several times in order to truly process what I was reading. But I couldn't put it down for long. I couldn't wait to see what the next chapter would say to me. Priscilla uses the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness, their whining and complaining, their doubt and fears and lack of trust in God to illustrate how we as Christians shrink back from God-sized challenges, take the easy way out, and let our comfort level decide our commitment level.
