Greetings!

What do you do to have a thankful heart? In this issue, several women share their secrets.

Caregiving and Thanksgiving

      by Kaye Kessler

Caregiving was never my role of choice. My husband Dick was the natural caregiver in our home, not me. I knew if I had a life-threatening illness, he would be at my bedside to the end. However, God had other plans for us. We've walked down the Alzheimer's Road together for eleven years. There's been grief and sadness as I've gradually lost the man I love and found myself being the primary caregiver for the man-child he has become. As his cognitive thinking slowly drained, I was sure his love of God and extensive scripture memorization would stick...but it hasn't. I now rest in the assurance that even though Dick no longer remembers God, God remembers him. Our lives are not as we planned, but we are still a part of God's perfect plan for us. And that plan includes me as caregiver.

Dick and Kaye Kessler

None of us would choose a debilitating disease for those we love, but can there be blessings and thanksgiving in the stresses and challenges of being a caregiver? Sometimes I need to make myself sit back and look for those. When I do, I find I have much to be thankful for: being held up in prayer, supportive family involved in Dick's care, old friends who have stayed close, and the new friends I've made thru this disease, giving me many opportunities for sharing. God's provision as Dick is now in a nursing home is another blessing. I'm blessed that God has given me the physical and emotional strength to visit and feed Dick twice each day. Daily God renews me. I amaze myself, and wonder at the patience and loving attitude God has given me, while visiting this man who no longer knows me, who cannot walk, talk, or care for himself. This daily routine was not on our radar as we viewed our senior years. But when I look for the blessings, they are there, they are plentiful, and I have much to be thankful for. With a grateful heart I praise God that He has given me the stamina and love to be Dick's earthly caregiver, knowing that I also have one, a Heavenly Caregiver.

Kaye and Dick have been married over 50 years, and have four children and 11 grandchildren. She has been involved in church administration, along with missions and women's ministries. Now as a caregiver she has found she has many opportunities for sharing as she interacts with neighbors, support group, friends, and the staff and visitors at Dick's nursing home.

Celebrating the memories

We thank God for transformed lives

Speaking of thankfulness, we are grateful for almost 100 years of women investing in girls through SMM. We are planning a celebration next year, and would like to produce a video commemorating the past and looking ahead to the future. If just 80 people who receive this message give $25 each, we can reach our goal. To help, click here.

A prayerful heart in hard times

True thankfulness comes from God alone. We are exhorted to be thankful for all things because God is in everything that happens to us. Can you thank Him for all that He is to you, all that He has allowed in your life? Can people see a thankful heart in you? Take some time this season to thank Him for what He is accomplishing through the hard times. And remember, if you want women to join with you in your intercession you can send it by e-mail to our prayer coordinator (no personal names, please, only initials).

Looking for time

The older my kids get the more I feel time slipping away from me....While lamenting to fellow young moms about never having time for myself, I was surprised at the response I received. Read the article

Do you speak English?

We're excited to announce that our next mission team will be to Corrientes, Argentina, at the request of missionary Alice Peacock. September 2013 is the targeted time. This team would be involved in teaching English as a Second Language and working with outreach to children in an impoverished area.

Another holiday

Thanking and giving  Women's Leadership Studies class

November includes some noteworthy days in addition to Thanksgiving. But there is a growing campaign to add another observance to the month. Coming on the heels of the biggest shopping weekend of the year - Black Friday and Cyber Monday - #GivingTuesday™ (November 27 this year) is designated a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.

I appreciate the fact that #Giving Tuesday turns our attention away from buying costly Christmas gifts and toward helping organizations that make a difference in people's lives. The Leadership and Transformational Summits sponsored by Women of Grace USA are doing just that. One woman said, "We are so blessed to have these gatherings. I take so much away from the workshops, classes and interaction with the other women."

Why not observe #GivingTuesday™ this year with a donation to Women of Grace USA, designated for scholarships for equipping women to serve? Your gift will make it possible for a financially struggling pastor's wife or student's wife to experience the community, encouragement and learning environment that characterizes these special events. Thank you.
