Ilmor and Chevrolet Get Ready for the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Season-Opening Race at Streets of St. Petersburg

The first race of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series is this weekend on the 14-turn street circuit on the Streets of St. Petersburg for the Firestone Grand Prix. Since Chevrolet returned to open wheel racing with Ilmor in 2012, their drivers and teams have taken the pole and the checkered flag at the season opening race setting the stage for two manufactures titles.

A few new faces have joined Chevrolet's star studded driver lineup for 2014 including the Chip Ganassi Racing stable which houses defending IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon.  A total of four organizations fielding 10 full-time cars will carry the Gold Bowtie as they take on the competition in 2014 powered by the purpose-built Chevrolet IndyCar 2.2L twin-turbocharged, direct-injected V-6 racing engine powered by renewable E85 ethanol fuel.  The Team Chevy line-up as the season kicks off in St. Petersburg will be:

  • Ed Carpenter Racing: Mike Conway, No. 20 Fuzzy's Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet (Road Courses only.  Ed Carpenter will drive the oval track races)
  • KV Racing Technology: Sebastien Bourdais, No. 11 Mystic/Hydroxycut KVSH Racing Chevrolet and Sebastian Saavadra, No. 17 KV AFS Racing Chevrolet
  • Team Penske: Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet and Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet
  • Chip Ganassi Racing: Ryan Briscoe, No. 8 NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, Scott Dixon, No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, Tony Kanaan, No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, and Charlie Kimball, No. 83 Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet

Additionally, IndyCar officials have made significant rule changes for engine manufacturers.  In 2014, engines are now required to complete 2,500 miles before change-out without penalty, or as high as 2,850 miles if they start a race with just short of 2,500 miles on the engine.  This is a 25 percent increase from 2013 where engines were to be changed after 2,000 miles of use.  Both engine manufacturers are required to use identical, yet revised twin turbos from Borg-Warner, a technology Chevrolet already had in place. Multiple areas of the engine were opened up to both engine manufacturers to be redesigned and resubmitted to IndyCar for re-homologation. Ilmor and Chevrolet worked tirelessly during 2013 on fuel injection, cylinder heads, plenum/inlet system, exhaust headers and calibration to improve upon an already immensely successful engine.

Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, said "Chevrolet has had good results on this circuit the past two seasons since returning to IndyCar competition.  With our updated 2.2L twin turbo direct injected V6 Chevrolet IndyCar engines, new formats to the championship points and a race on the road course at IMS to kick off the month of May, there is a plethora of new challenges to look forward to.  Top it off with Verizon as the new Series sponsor to engage the fans with leading edge communication technology and this could be the season to remember."

ABC will have a live telecast of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday, March 30, with pre-race at 3 PM ET, and race start at 3:27 PM. Radio broadcast can be heard on XM Radio 211/Sirius Radio 211.  The IndyCar website features the IMS Radio Network, which includes live timing and scoring, as well as more information about the 2014 IndyCar season:

Ilmor Acquires Phil Harper Motorsports and Scorpion Racing Engines

(adapted from

Earlier this month, Ilmor finalized the purchase of Phil Harper Motorsports along with Scorpion Racing Engines.  The new partnership will allow Ilmor to expand its existing racing efforts into short track and offshore racing.

Paul Ray, President of Ilmor, said, "Phil approached us about merging his companies with ours and it was an opportunity that doesn't come along very often.  We tried to enter the short track market a few years ago by building midget engines then go into sprint cars. We always felt that short track racing was a place for us to be involved, but it is a tough market to break into, especially when you have a great group of established engine builders. Phil is giving us the opportunity to re-enter with an established and successful customer base."

Harper has been looking for a partnership like this for a long time, and he finds some great benefits for this acquisition.

"Ilmor has been looking to grow the US offshore racing market along with all of the circle track and road race markets that PHM is already involved in.  They want to diversify their involvement in other types of racing.  It's a perfect fit for Ilmor because of the major involvement that I already have in all of these markets."

Phil Harper Motorsports clients are a who's who in the Pro Late Model ranks.  Some of those clients include: Harrison Burton, Cody Coughlin, Spencer Davis, Brandon Odom, Chase Elliott, Anderson Bowen and Bubba Pollard.  His engines have won the last four out of five Snowflake 100's at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.

Scorpion Power clients include several notable offshore racing teams in the rapidly expanding Superboat-class field such as Broadco, STIHL, Instigator, Cleveland Construction and Spirit of Qatar 20.

Ilmor's Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Ilmor has worked diligently for the past several years to develop and produce a series of emissions compliant high-performance and recreational marine engines.  All of our marine engines are compliant with US, California and European emissions standards, with our 5.7L, 6.0L and 6.2L achieving 4-star emissions ratings from CARB.  Additionally, our 5.7L and 6.0L engines are compliant with the especially stringent BSO regulations in the Lake Constance area in Europe.

As part of our commitment to emissions excellence and long-term sustainability, Ilmor has recently partnered with the nonprofit conservation organization American Forests to assist with their global reforestation efforts.    Every time an Ilmor engine is sold, several trees will be planted to offset the carbon footprint of that engine over its expected lifecycle.

Ilmor's initial contributions will include 18,000 trees over 40 acres split between two projects within our home state.  The Abbey Road Old Growth Project is based out of Huron Manistee National Forest in Michigan.  This ecosystem was damaged by beetle infestation and root fungus, and American Forests plans to plant white pine and white spruce across 29 acres and restore these important wetlands.  Our second partnership project is the West Beech Bark Disease Diversity Plantings located in Hiawatha National Forest in the Upper Peninsula.    American Forests is committed to reforesting 776 acres of white pine, eastern hemlock and northern red oak damaged by Beech Bark Disease.    This tremendous effort will help maintain the local species diversity and protect against further disease outbreak, fire or invasive species.

Ilmor will continue to donate trees with every engine sale through 2015 with opportunities to extend their partnership thereafter.  We will provide additional updates as to the progress of these projects or any new undertakings with American Forests.

About American Forests:

American Forests protects and restores urban and rural forests. Founded in 1875, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the country has served as a catalyst for many of the most important milestones in the conservation movement, including the founding of the U.S. Forest Service, the national forest and national park systems and literally thousands of forest ecosystem restoration projects and public education efforts. In the last two decades, American Forests has planted more than 45 million trees in forests throughout the U.S. and in 44 countries, resulting in cleaner air and drinking water, restored habitat for wildlife and fish, and the removal of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. About Ilmor

Ilmor Engineering was founded in 1984 when engineers Mario Illien (IL) and Paul Morgan (MOR) reached out to Roger Penske with a plan to build a better engine for the IndyCar racing series. Since then, legendary drivers like Andretti, Unser, and Castroneves have all driven cars powered by Ilmor engines.  Ilmor now has over 270 IndyCar race wins, 18 Indianapolis 500 victories, 44 Formula 1 wins, and two Formula 1 World Championships.

Since 2003, Ilmor has applied its expertise to the marine industry, creating completely unique engines for high performance powerboats. These engines include the iconic Dodge Viper-based MV10-725, or the new MV8-570, the most powerful emissions-certified small-block gasoline production marine engine today. Ilmor has also expanded its competitive tradition into powerboat racing, winning seven World Championships in Powerboat racing since 2007.

The positive response to Ilmor's products and customer service has resulted in Ilmor becoming a major supplier of powerboat engines and drives to boat makers all over the world, paving the way for product expansion. In 2010, Ilmor launched a series of inboard GM-based V-8 engines, all manufactured in its state-of-the-art 50,000 square foot marine engine assembly and test facility in Mooresville, North Carolina, specifically committed to managing the long term growth of our marine products.

Ilmor still follows the same principles put in place by its founders: innovative solutions, precision engineering and manufacturing, high quality, reliable products, and unrivaled customer support.
