~ Worshiping God ~
When we are not in the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent or Easter,
we are in the growth period of Ordinary Time -
marked by the living and hopeful color of Green.

While the 'seasons' of the church year focus upon one aspect of the presence
of God in our lives, Ordinary Time celebrates all aspects and occurs twice
in the Liturgical / Christian calendar. First during the time between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, and then again between Pentecost and Advent.
This is why this Sunday we pick up where we left off, at Ordinary Sunday Nine.

May your Ordinary Time be EXTRA-ordinary!

This week's story about "Lazarus and the Rich Man," is probably a very familiar one, even to persons with only marginal associations with the Christian faith or the New Testament. You may have heard it told in different ways.

Maybe you heard class warfare or resentment in this story; or a greedy, uncaring man getting his due. Maybe it was told as a warning about riches. Or maybe it was presented as a way to justify and support a particular set of doctrines about heaven and hell.
A little distance from the story as usually told may help.

Consider immersing yourself in this 1610 piece of anonymous artwork depicting this story. What does it illuminate for you.

Notice, Lazarus is seen just outside the door of the rich man's kitchen. He's literally right there, not a full step away. But you have to look for him. The painting is so full of the riches of this kitchen, that Lazarus, though right at the door, is hard to see at all.

Looking into the story we realize just how physically close Lazarus and the rich man were. This makes the language of a "great gulf fixed" in the telling of the afterlife story terribly ironic.

We are reminded this week that it's all about the kingdom of God.

See you Sunday as we continue our work as the people of God to learn even better just how to BE the people of God here and now.
