February in Truro ...
This month we pick up over an hour of additional daylight, but with temperatures just about the same as January. That's not enough sun to overcome the frigid bay and ocean waters and the cold of the frozen ground.
Expect an average temperature of 31°F, with average lows of 22°F and highs of 36°F. We get an average total of 4 inches of rain and 10 inches of snow.
Below are some of the activities and events happening about town this month.

Truro Solar Farm Update
Special Town Meeting unanimously approved the Truro Solar Farm project at the "dump." In December, the Board of Selectmen approved signing a contract with SunEdison as developer of the 3,000+ panel system. Construction will begin as soon as the landfill capping is completed, and the winter weather permits. UPDATE: Eversource will need to do some work before we can connect the Truro Solar Farm to the grid. In short, they will need to build a larger "pipe" to carry the electricity from the solar farm to the grid that runs down Route 6. This engineering project is proceeding in parallel with the landfill capping work. |
Food Pantry
Nineteen years ago, the Truro Food Pantry opened for business at the Christian Union Church in North Truro, serving an average of 15 adults and 5 children monthly and providing approximately 27 grocery bags of food each month. Fast forward to 2016 where 105-120 adults, 13-36 children, and 9-15 seniors come each month. We distribute approximately 346 grocery bags of food monthly. The food that fills those grocery bags includes the typical fare of rice, beans, soup, tuna, oil, and pasta. However, we provide additional packages of chicken, beef, pork, turkey, and fish as well as milk, eggs, potatoes, carrots, onions, fresh vegetables and fruit, cheese, yogurt, and butter. Our access to the Greater Boston Food Bank and our capability to save by shopping for mark-downs and buying in bulk has been the secret of our ability to stretch our donations to meet the growing needs of the community. Our thanks go to the Dexter Keezer Fund of Truro, which includes generous quarterly gifts from the Surdam Wood Family Charitable Foundation, the Knights of Columbus food drive, a Truro Central School food drive in January, and "Food For Fines" from the Library in January and February. The work of the food pantry is especially rewarding because all our clients are so appreciative of the volunteers, and they are genuinely grateful for the good food and tangible help the Truro Food Pantry provides. Fire Department
Open-burning season began January 15, 2016, and it ends May 1, 2016. A no-fee permit is required from the Fire Department and can be obtained at the Public Safety Facility. We ask that you read the permit thoroughly so that you are familiar with the safety regulations and call-in procedure. Also, you are encouraged to read over a copy of the State Fire Marshall's open-burning safety tips, which will be provided with your permit. Your safety is our number one concern. If you have any questions, please contact the Fire Department @ 508-487-7548. We can't remind you enough of the dangers of Carbon Monoxide. Carbon Monoxide exposure, especially during winter months, is a very real hazard. Your home should have CO detectors less than seven (7) years old, with fresh batteries; and you should also make sure that heating system vents are clear of snow. The State Fire Marshall's Office has an informative Carbon Monoxide flyer available through this link. As always, the Truro Fire Department is available to answer any questions you may have. |
Truro Conservation Trust
The Trustees of the Truro Conservation Trust (TCT) are pleased and proud to report our acquisition on December 30, 2015 of 3.8 acres of prime developable land. A portion of the property is known as "Edgewood Farm." This acquisition is added to the 317 acres of Truro land under our protection and stewardship. The purchase was made possible by a $680,000 bequest to the TCT from the estate of the late David Kuechle. Mr. Kuechle was a part-time resident of Truro and a valued TCT Trustee for many years. A scenic walking trail, currently under construction on the property, will be named in his honor. More... |
Castle Hill Center for the Arts
The Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill is proud and excited to announce that on January 7, 2016 it became the owner of the beautiful and historic Edgewood Farm in Truro. Over the past two years, Castle Hill has worked to purchase 7 acres of Edgewood Farm from the family of Eleanor Meldahl, a co-founder of Castle Hill. This property includes three historic buildings - the original homestead was built in 1849 -, a contemporary studio, a woodworking building suitable for conversion into the printmaking facility, and three smaller free-standing structures. Surrounded by stunning landscapes, the site is a perfect campus setting for Castle Hill to develop its artist-in-residency program. Edgewood Farm will allow Castle Hill to expand its commitment to making the arts accessible to the community; by providing summer housing for students and faculty, enhancing educational programming, and hosting exhibitions and special events. Sustainable CAPE
Sustainable CAPE wishes to invite everyone to our annual Children's Garden Art Exhibition, this year entitled After Audubon. The exhibit, pastels on archival paper inspired by John James Audubon drawings, focuses upon this year's learning about birds, gardens, and the symbiotic relationships we share. We are grateful for the community support we receive to run our children's programs, both in school and out of school. We thank each and every one of you who has contributed to our growth and reach. And a special shout-out to the Truro Cultural Council, which enables the depth and breadth of this Children's Community Garden Program. The program is a collaboration between Sustainable CAPE, the Truro Recreation Program, the Truro Public Library, Barnstable County 4-H, and AmeriCorps. After Audubon is a beautiful display of children's learning and creativity, as well as the power of positive collaboration and mutual support. We hope you will have a chance to stop by the library and enjoy the show!

Truro Community Solar
The Truro Solar Farm is being built large enough to meet all the electricity needs of the town buildings and streetlights, plus enough added capacity to provide for about 100 to 150 households. SunEdison has agreed to give priority to qualified households in Truro for a limited period of time, before offering it to other customers. Residential customers will be able to use the solar output of the Truro Solar Farm to offset their Eversource electricity usage. That will end up reducing your electric bill by about 10%, the portion that is offset by solar. To learn more about this program, please click here. |
Pilgrim Nuclear Will Shutdown for Blizzard
In response to questions about Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station's safety during the upcoming blizzard Storm Mars, an Entergy spokesman wrote late on Sunday night, February 7th: "Entergy has decided to perform a pre-emptive shutdown tonight. We will have a Resident Inspector on-site to observe the shutdown." Good news for Truro and Cape Cod, and one less thing to worry about during the storm.
