Special Town Meeting - Save the Date
There will be a Special Town Meeting on Thursday, November 5th, at 6 p.m. at the Truro Central School.  One of the important votes is to allow the Town to use the land at the landfill and work with a developer to construct a solar photovoltaic system to provide electricity for town buildings, thereby reducing our electricity costs. We have been working on this effort for 4 years and if we do not have a quorum at this Town Meeting, we won't have another chance to vote on this project because the tax incentives that make it possible and profitable will expire.
October in Truro ...
September 23 was the autumnal equinox, when the sun crossed the equator and night and day were the same length - 12 hours - all over the world. This month, days will continue to shorten almost 3 minutes each day.
Shorter days will drop the average high temperature to 61, with average lows of 46. We get about 6 days of rain with an average total of 3 inches. Expect our first frost.

Preserving Truro - Housing Forum
Truro is changing in ways that go to the very heart of the community, and the lack of affordable community housing is at the very core of this change. The Town of Truro is presenting a forum on Saturday, October 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to provide insight into the trends that are changing the town. How these trends will impact the future for our residents, non-residents and visitors will depend upon our community response to shaping our future together. Coffee and Refreshments will be provided and a short video will highlight the perspective of our neighbors, employers and town officials.      More...      Full Report

Fire Chief Brian Davis Retiring
Chief Brian Davis retires from the Truro Fire and Rescue Department at the end of October, after serving the Town for 50 years. Brian has given his time, expertise, and heart to the Town of Truro since he was a teenager. Over the many years with the Department, he rarely missed a call, and for those of us responding - he was always a welcome sight on the scene - where he took control in a calm demeanor and then offered care and comfort to people in need.
There are so many people in Truro, whether they be year-round residents, or visitors, who will remember him for being there when they found themselves in the midst of a motor vehicle accident, fire, or medical crisis. He is a rare and fast-disappearing example of a true volunteer fire fighter, whose primary goal has always been to help others. The good news is he is not leaving Truro and will continue to do fire inspections for the Department. We wish him well and we thank him for all he has given to us over these many years.

CPC recognizes Carl Brotman

Truro has a local "hero!" The Community Preservation Coalition has recognized Carl Brotman, Chair of the Truro Housing Authority (THA), for making a significant contribution to the success of the Community Preservation Act (CPA.) Carl will be presented with a "CPA Hero" award on October 6th at the Massachusetts State House. Governor Charlie Baker, joined by Senate President Stanley Rosenberg and Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo will be honored speakers at the event. For your convenience, the Town Website Assessors Page has the FY2016 values. If you have questions regarding your property valuation, please contact the Assessors' Office: 508-349-7004, Extensions 15, 16, or 17.
Commission on Disabilities
The Truro Commission on Disabilities thanks everyone who made our recent ADA Training Day such a success, including Savory and Sweet Escapes, Captain's Choice Restaurant, and the very interesting and engaging trainers themselves. Thanks to all our participants as well, including representatives from Provincetown, Wellfleet, and Truro. Using Snow's Park as a model, the participants learned how to assess the accessibility of a site and to make short, intermediate, and long-term goals to improve access.
Historical Society
A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make 2015 one of the most successful years ever for the Truro Historical Society! Our two major exhibitions, "Living Legacies" and "Draggers, Trawlers and Traps," were very well received. More than 500 people attended one of our three free Open House events. In addition, admission to the museum and events were up significantly this year, we had a hugely successful Gala Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction, and we held our first ever Photographers' Day. Our success is largely due to the efforts of our many volunteers, both long-term and new. Please consider joining us for the 2016 Season as a volunteer. You can also help by signing up for our email notices, "liking" us on Facebook, becoming a member, and encouraging your family and friends to join us.
Truro Treasures Weekend

The Truro Treasures Committee wishes to thank everybody for their support in making Truro Treasures Weekend a success. We had beautiful weather, and fun was had by all.

Truro Ag Fair
Thanks to all who volunteered, sponsored, and participated in this year's Truro Agricultural Fair. It was a glorious day of fun and laughter, and we are so appreciative of everyone's help to make the event a memorable success. Together we celebrated agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, and farming; we also enabled over $50,000 to change hands and to support our local harvesters while educating over 2500 people on all aspects of sustainability. All while having a great time... Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who took part in this important and fun work. Thank you!
A special shout out to our sustaining long-term supporters: 3 Harbors Real Estate, Cape Air, the Cape Cod Five, the Marion Institute, and Connecting for Change, Seamen's Bank and the Truro Non-Resident Taxpayers' Association. Support those who support a more sustainable community!
Truro Food Pantry
Our last column was about the food waste in this country, which is estimated at 40% of the food supply. Yet in the midst of this abundance, food insecurity is experienced by many in our own community. It is so poignant to hear a client tell us, "I am so glad that I found out about the Pantry. I was hungry this winter."
Any Truro resident can apply to use the Food Pantry simply by calling the Lower Cape Outreach Council (LCOC) 508-255-0270, a non-profit social service agency located in Orleans. LCOC screens applicants for residence, need, and family composition. Those who are eligible for food assistance are referred to the Truro Pantry. The Pantry is funded by donations to the Dexter Keezer Fund in Truro. Also, it is approved by the LCOC and the Greater Boston Food Bank to order food at significant discount. We typically pick up orders at the Cape Cod distribution center in Harwich twice a month. There are food pantry collection baskets in the foyer of the Truro Library, Community Center, and Seamen's Bank branches. The pantry is staffed by volunteers who pick up deliveries, shop for food, stock the shelves, and assist in the distribution of canned, packaged, and fresh food to our clients by appointment Mon.-Fri. Anyone who would like to volunteer, to contribute food, or to contribute financially may contact Sally at 508-349-2601 or e-mail, trurogleaners@gmail.com
Truro Meeting House
The Truro Meeting House will be closed for the winter season. There will be limited access to enable the preservation work and accessibility construction to proceed. During the spring we will post our schedule for next season's events.
Sustainable Cape
Back-to-school harvest! The children of the Truro and Wellfleet elementary schools are once again working with Sustainable CAPE's Farmer-in-the-School, Stephanie Rein; and they are growing food for their schools' snacks and lunches.

Pilgrim could be next; why take the chance?
Pilgrim Nuclear represents just 2% of our electric grid's capacity.  In March 2011, loss of power for cooling water triggered meltdowns at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant. Explosions sent a massive plume of radioactive material spreading across the countryside. About 160,000 people were evacuated. Fortunately for them, they didn't have to get across the Sagamore or Bourne bridges.   More...
